What's the deal with Oppo?

I was absent from the hifi world from about 2005 to 2017-ish. I keep on seeing listings for Oppo players and they seem to be highly regarded by people. I’ve read the wikipedia page on them and it really lists a short history and their products.

What was the big deal about them? Were they just considered to be well engineered product at a great price point the performed? Simple as that?

Was there any special technology that they used?

Not doubting that they were great (never heard one), just trying to find out what the big deal is with them?

"I think you have answered your own question.I have one and they IMHO really found a gap in the market and proceeded to demonstrate how to build a reasonably priced player.Of course they are not the best, but for the price vs performance they really found a sweet spot.
They were the first reasonably priced line of "universal players."
If that is your thing pay up.
If not
