What + experience have you had with an indoor FM antenna?

Right now, I cannot do an outdoor antenna, so thinking of adding an indoor one.  I had the Magnum Dynalab indoor antenna and would say it was O.K. ....I have not been very interested in amplified antennas.  I am not in a good FM area and find online FM to be limited in sound quality, frequency response...and way too much talk...even some esoteric online seem to have hosts/D.J.s that cannot shut up and play music.

If you can mount an outdoor antenna in the highest point of your attic* and aimed (best as possible) at the desired stations, it would help.

Or: an outdoor Omni, up there*.

Not being anywhere close to a decent FM station can suck.

That was one of the very few benefits of living in Cleveland, O.

It really all depends on location.

FWIW, I have found the Magnum Dynalab  SR100 to work very well in various locations:

FM Antennas - dipole vertical fm antenna and silver ribbon antenna (magnumdynalab.com)

IME, even better than their more expensive ST-2.  A tweak hack for the SR100 is to shorten the built in twin lead cable and attach a balun transformer as close as possible to the antenna segments and then connect a quad insulated RG-6 co-axial cable from balun transformer to the tuner. The antenna segments have sharp edges; so it might not be best around children

For much less money, I have also had some success with a Radio Shack Cat. No. 15-1874 TV  telescopic rabbit ears antenna. This comes with an approximately 4' long non-detachable RG-59 co-axial cable.
Pretty awful, even up in the loft, but this was 30 years ago.

Apparently the best way to go was to fit an outdoor roof mounted rotating unit back then.

One for the real afficinados I think.

Strangely enough I got some decent results experimenting with different cables stuck to the wall.

I used to find a weak station and then experiment with different cables and positions.

I can say without a doubt, at least when it came to picking up FM stations, that not all cables were the same.

Rather frustratingly, the signal would improve whilst I was holding the wire antenna, bit as soon as I’d let go...

The FM radio band is from 88 to 108 MHz between VHF television Channels 6 and 7.

Yes, an old-fashioned TV antenna in the attic dedicated to FM. This type if it fits:

anyone know about this type?

Mine fits because I hung it from strings from the rafters, right over my main system. Aimed right at WBGO 88.3 Jazz station. Later I learned here, it’s antenna is not in Newark, but in NYC, luckily it’s the same angle from my house so aimed at Newark worked.

my mx110z tube tuner/preamp: all the reviews say great, ’IF’ you give it a good signal. It sounds awesome.

Meanwhile, I have a similar TV antenna on the chimney. I put it back after Superstorm Sandy. Had my generator, but no cable/signal for 8 days. Most people never see free ’over the air’ digital TV. It can be as good as and sometimes better than cable.

I split it and also use it for FM for my Garage/Shop System’s receiver. Same thing WBGO is all I ever listen to in the house.

I have Bob Carver’s TX-2 AM/FM Tuner, it’s a good choice for weak signal areas.

Public radio while driving because my 2012 Volvo C70’s Antenna SUCKS!!! It won’t get WBGO where many other vehicles do, except when the sky is overcast, reflecting more signal strength.

Anybody know a fix, a signal boost without noise for Volvo antennas?
generally a poor one.  I've had both, and the outdoor antenna is so far superior.  A compromise is an attic antenna. Overall, nothing beats elevation, followed by having good directional antenna.

Indoor antennas with FM amplifiers for the most part really suck.

If you have the option to stream a station you may find you are better off.

E
I have lots of good antennas on the shelf.
Radio is soooo 20th century.
TV antenna is in the attic.
If you're not in a good area, an indoor antenna isn't going to help much.  As others have said, the roof is best.

Here's another site with information on signal strength.

This is a good place for all things having to do with FM Tuners.  There is also a related groups.io page called FMTuners.
