Vinyl has been used predominately since the 50's and can be cleaned with an alcohol based cleaner. Shellac was used mostly around the same time as 78's were more common and they will not withstand the use of alcohol based cleaners. These statements are generalizations since there was certainly overlap between the common use of both materials and speed settings, but the idea is there.
