Up-sampling rates from the disc player

I see where some disc players offer different setting for sampling rates 2x-4x-6x and 8x times. Is their Pros and Cons to each sample rate? Is their a rate for each type of music Folk-Rock-Jazz-Cassical ? Is one rate better for SACD and one for Red Book CDs? Is it the quality of the recording on the disc. So you must change the setting for each disc played? Any rule of thumb to kind of give you a guide line?
