Music is NOT getting worse. To repeat, music is NOT getting worse!
Mainstream forms of POP music are getting worse.
If all one does, is compare mainstream popular forms of music of today, vs from the past, then we agree. But there is so much truly great music being made, if one steps out of the mainstream, is open to different forms of music, is not hoping to find modern mainstream music to replace the music that was the ’soundtrack of their youth’.
I listen to various forms of: modern and contemporary classical, contemporary progressive music (prog, avant-prog, Zeuhl, prog-metal, Canterbury, etc), progressive jazz (avant-garde, fusion, chamber jazz, post bop, M-Base, etc), and my main problem is keeping up with so much great music.
Hell, if I purchased every great new release just from just one label, say ECM, that would probably be 40 new recordings a year. And that’s only one of many labels, and one of many genres.
The things I listen for in music: very high level of musicianship, complexity, broad and deep levels of emotional content, creativity, are being created from bands, composers, musicians all over the world, on a constant basis.
Let me also add, I am in my 60's, so my post is not from some young guy complaining about a bunch of old codgers, claiming that all music was better in their youth.
