The Hub: AKFest 2010 -''Audio Karm'', not Bill the Cat

Several years ago, a group of members of the Detroit-based Audio Karma website got together to put on a show, which they dubbed "AKFest". Despite appearances, the name was NOT an homage to the hairball-hacking Bloom County character, Bill the Cat. AKFest 2004 ran one day, and featured a variety of new and vintage audio gear. By all accounts, a good time was had by all.

AKFest 2010 will be considerably more grand than that initial affair, although the mix of new and vintage gear will continue. The show will run Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2, at the Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel, in the detroit suburb of Novi Admission for both days is only $25; hours will be Saturday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM, and Sunday, 9:30AM - 5:00 PM.

Major manufacturers such as McIntosh, Marantz, Monster and Wadia will be exhibiting, along with audiophile favorites such as Tyler Acoustics, Salk Sound, Grant Fidelity and Classic Audio Reproductions (complete exhibitor list). In conjunction with vintage dealer Audio Classics, McIntosh will host a static display of classic Mac models.

A variety of door prizes will be awarded to attendees, courtesy of sponsors including Jolida, Audience, David Michael Audio and NHT. A highlight of the show will be a live performance Saturday by blues guitarist David Gerald and his band.

AKFest was at the leading edge of a resurgence in regional American audio shows; Rocky Mountain Audio Fest also made its first appearance in 2004. AKFest is known for its friendly atmosphere and close interaction between exhibitors and attendees. If you have questions for a manufacturer, this is the place to approach them.

Unlike many audio shows, AKFest also caters to the DIY crowd. Exhibits will include AK member's self-built rigs, while dealers like Madisound will show kits and components.

No matter what your area of interest is, from ultra-high-end to self-build on a budget, AKFest will have something for you. This year's AKFest promises to be the biggest and best yet, and should be a great weekend of sound and socializing!
