The best speaker you ever heard?
In my opinion, the speaker is by far the most important part of the audio system. After all, it is the only part you hear. OK, the other stuff really matters a lot, but without a great speaker... No go.
I am a bit 'speaker-obsessed' I guess, and now I am wondering: What are the best speakers you have ever heard, and what made them the best?

Telescope_trade, they have been selling these mk2 901's for about a year now. They don't say anything about the mk2 901's on their web site but if you call bose and talk to one of their bose techs at 1-800-367-4008 they will tell you about these mk2 901's. They did some improvements to their speaker cones and they also now use a new type of surrounds that will last a lot longer now. They also did some improvements to their equalizers too. |
Mpit, BUT have you heard BOSE's newest 901's yet??? Crossoverless speakers have a certain Musicality NO Other speaker design concept has EVER matched....apparently, most crossovers interfere with the most critical parts of the audio spectrum and elimination of the same results in a Natural/Emotional Delivery, beyond scientifically explainable proof. |
Macrojack, the new and improved bose 901 series 6 version 2's have come a long ways from the 901 speakers they sold back in the 70's ! We compared my new bose 901's to my friends up to date 901's from 70's and friends 901's sounded like they had a blanket over them and had a very harsh top end too ! I have never heard RECORDED MUSIC sound this DAMN GOOD before ! These new 901's get you closer to a LIVE PERFORMANCE than any other speakers I have ever heard period !!... ENJOY THE MUSIC |
I called two of my friends over so we could see if we could set-up my two pair of BOSE 901 series 6 version 2's "STACKED" a little better. I just sat there listening to music and my two friends moved the 901's inch by inch until I found the "G-SPOT" for the 901's in my room. Both my friends were amazed at the sound coming out of these 901 speakers ! One of them has been going to the CES Show for years and he told me that the only time he's heard sound like that was at a LIVE CONCERT !... |
I think Bose got it "RIGHT" with their latest 901 series 6 version 2's this time around ! They made a lot improvements to their latest 901's and it shows too ! After listening to them for over 6 months now I think they have two of the best qualities that I always love most about the raved Quad ESL-57's...midrange clarity and harmonic cohesireness are so captivating that it just draws into the music much..more, Like only a very few speakers can match ! I think these latest 901's sounds more like LIVE MUSIC than any other speakers I have ever heard ! The best bargain I have ever seen on the market.. period !! |
That's the problem here, nobody else here has heard the.. "latest BOSE 901's yet". People here think these latest BOSE 901's are the same as the 901's made in the past BUT there not ! The have been a lot improvements to these latest 901's and it shows too ! They are now using a different speaker drive and it looks like a high quality driver too. It's just a matter of time before someone else here try out these latest 901's and posts how GOOD these speakers really are. BOSE BASHERS.. you go head and have your fun BUT I know how "DAMN GOOD" these "LATEST" 901's are !!......... |
Macrojack, NO, I'm not a SHILL but I do want the member on these forums to know that these LATEST 901's are NOT the same as the 901's made in the PAST. I think it's PRETTY SMART when you find a product that is right up there with the "finest sounding speakers on the market" for.. "A LOT... LESS MONEY" !........$$$ |
One of the MOST IMPORTANT things and most overlooked things with the Bose 901's is using really good interconnects and speaker cables with these speakers. This is just as important with the 901's as speaker set up is ! I think a lot more people would like these 901's if they would just use better cables with these speakers. You are never going hear the full potential of these 901's until you use better cables with them !... |
I did some tweaks to my new Bose 901's that made them sound MUCH..BETTER !! I took off the front and back grills because these grills just COLORS the SOUND TOO MUCH !.. With these grills off these speakers sound cleaner and much more open and more realistic too ! Another tweak I did to these speakers was putting some self-adhesive foam insulation around the front speaker driver. Everything now sounds SOOO SPOOKY REAL now !! These speakers now don't sound anything like they used to sound, it's a night and day difference now ! I think these 901's would get a lot more love if they only knew how good these speakers can sound with these tweaks !! I now love these 901's with most of the speaker drivers facing the front wall !!... |
Transaudio, everybody has different tastes and they will never be a speaker made that will please everyone. I have heard a lot speakers in my time and they still have not perfected the "Tweeters" yet !.. If you don't get the highs right it does not matter how good the midrange or bottom end sounds because it will just not sound right.. period !... |
I talked to Jeff Dorgay of Tone Audio and he told me that he's not going take off the fiberglass grilles or do any mods on these Bose 901's, for this review on the 901's. So this review on these 901's are not going to be on the same 901's that I have been raving about on these forums ! My Modified 901's with the teflon tape on all the plastic parts on the back side of the 901's, are much better sounding speakers, so we may never see a magazine or online reviewer do a review on a Modified Bose 901 speakers that now sounds "Damn GOOD" turned around backwards and only 12 inches off the floor.... |

Pubul57 , I think these latest 901's are one of the very best bargains I have ever come across and after you do a few easy mods to them, remove all those fiberglass grilles and cover all the plastic parts sticking way out on the back side of these speakers with teflon tape. The better the source gear and interconnects and speaker cables are, the better these 901's will sound !! I'm also using some RCA to XLR adapters I got here on audiogon from Ed Houston [email protected] so I could use my CD Balance inputs on my Yamaha a-s2000 integrated amp. I have my bose equalizer between my CD player and my CD Balance inputs. Using these Balance inputs really got my 901's to SING like never before !!... |
Drubin , would you call NOT using the bose equalizer with his reference gear, a "fair review" on 901's ???... I can see now that Jeff does not want to give these 901's a fair review with the most important part of this review ! I think Jeff sees the potential of these latest 901's BUT he just don't want to find out about it by not using the equalizer with his reference gear...... |
Reprince , I don't like these 901's without the equalizer, the equalizer lets you hear the full potential of these 901's.. period ! It does NOT degrade the sound ! If you look down this page your see that Jeff did NOT use the equalizer with his reference gear and we all will find out about this in a few days when Jeff writes part three of this review... http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=279685&page=9 He needs to hook up the bose equalizer with his reference interconnects and put it in his reference system and do this review the right way, he's being very unfair by not using the most important part of this 901 system !! |

I was wondering why it was taking my modified BOSE 901's SOOO long to breaking-in really good and found out it was the glue coated dust caps ! I took my finger and pushed around on the dust caps until most of the dried glue stiffness was gone and then the dried glue came off pretty easy...so anyone trying this tweak, DO NOT put glue on the dust caps! Now these speakers have a near perfect total balance...a must try tweak for these 901's !.. WOW...if only BOSE made them like this many years ago they would be a H*ll of lot more raves about these 901's !!... |

In the Tone Publications review of these latest 901's Jeff did NOT use bose equalizer AT ALL !! I wonder why Jeff did this for Because without the equalizer these 901's do not sound good at all !! Jsquattrin... I did not like these latest bose 901's at all the way bose recommended setup !.. You also have to use really GOOD interconnects and speaker cables with these 901's too, like the Crimson Musiclink cables ! Also, these speakers sound like sh*t with the bose stands, I got the best sound out of these 901's by putting them on top of some plastic milk crates about 12 inches off the floor and with the 901's tilted up a little bit by two large wagner anti-vibration pads under each speaker and with the 901's turned around backwards with most of the speaker drivers facing me ! They also sound their best in a large room with nothing around them !.. I also have my bose equalizer hook up between my source and my amazingly good Yamaha a-s2000 integrated amp that is also a really good match with these latest 901's too ! I also using some world class ac outlets in my system, "Maestro ac outlets" !! To my ears,everything in my system are "Giant Killers" !! |
Wynnosu , these Bose 901's are some of the most revealing speakers on the market and I found out by doing few tweaks to them they really come alive and sound amazing !! You need to take OFF ALL these "fiberglass" grilles because I have never heard speakers that sounded better with the grilles ON and sure not grilles made of fiberglass !! On the backside of these 901's where most of the speaker drives are, there's a lot plastic parts that are sticking out...those ports and other plastic parts that just COLORS the SOUND WAY TOO MUCH !! After I covered all these plastic parts with teflon tape you don't hear this anymore!...maybe covering these plastic parts with non-hardening modeling clay would be better, I don't know. What I found very important with these 901's was using GOOD interconnects and speaker cables, just as important as "set-up", maybe MORE important!.. and the best cables I have found was Crimson R.M. Music Link cables. These cables are so GOOD with these 901's that it's like Crimson custom made these cables just for these 901's !... We all think that the "stock" pair of 901's are better than the new Magnepan 1.7's. And we all think two pair of modified 901's "STACKED" with all the grilles OFF and teflon tape on ALL the plastic parts sticking OUT are as GOOD as my friends Quad ESL 2905's !! After hearing two pair of these modified 901's "stacked" it's very addictive and very hard going back to listening to just one pair...ever again !!... We will NEVER get a magazine review on these modified 901's "stacked" BUT maybe some of the 901 owners out there will try this and let us know what they think about it.... |
