Tekton Design Moab

Ordered a pair just now. In Dark Gray, to which Tammy immediately said, "Oh the Charcoal is beautiful!" Charcoal sounds better than Dark Gray (even though we are talking about the same color!) so Charcoal it is!

My beloved Talon Khorus do still sound awfully good. It will be interesting to see how the Moabs stock out of the box compare with these tweaked and modded warhorses. Both the strength, and the weakness, of the Khorus is using the 10" woofer to cover so much midrange. Its a strength because it makes for a very smooth and cohesive sound. But its a weakness because its asking a lot of such a large driver to go so high. Talon makes up for it with their isobaric design. Mounted inside and directly behind the woofer is another identical driver facing the opposite direction. The idea is this relieves the front facing driver of having to compress the air inside the cabinet. This does allow for a much faster response, and is a big reason for the wonderful music the Khorus produces.

I have a feeling however it is no match for Eric Alexander's ultra-low mass driver array solution. Only one way to know for sure. So we will just have to see!

Wow, I knew it would take a while to make my Moabs. I was not ready for over three months of waiting!  Still no notification of completion.
@millercarbon.  I hope they are worth the wait! The build up of anticipation is killing me :). Great to hear they compete with your 3x the price Talons. The Tekton website says boldly that production is swamped. Great product at great price yields big demand. Love all the Moab tweaks that are being recommended on this thread. I don’t like all the flaming though. Can’t the haters just pick a different thread to spoil?  They are probably Biden/Harris voters, they ruin everything, “cough, Portland, cough”, lol. The magnetic levitation pucks/bars for the speakers seem interesting, the prices for seem quite high, $600 for a set! I had not noticed any difference with my Thiel 2.3 just placed on the hardwood vs spiked with floor protectors. I did hear a difference with vibration control with my Ah Tjoeb CD player. The Moabs are 1st order crossover speakers, anyone play with tilting the speakers (like Vandersteens)?  I would suspect the Moab’s MTM set up would not like that as much as TMW speaker would.
I just came into some extra money. Being that my moabs have taken so long to fabricate, I decided to upgrade to a pair of encores. When you put out a great product at a great price, the backlog grows. I called Tammy and she was happy to oblige. They did not even make me pay the extra deposit fee for 50% of the price of the speakers. She couldn’t tell me any estimated time of arrival however.  I’m hoping they will be my forever speakers.  I am 49 years old, and it took me 20 years to upgrade my Thiel 2.3’s. RIP Jim! That is unless I move into a much smaller retirement apartment, then will have to downgrade accordingly those retirement apartments are quite small.
I just put in an order for a dark gray pair of Moab’s yesterday with Tammy!  I ended up getting the eight ohm version secondary to having a 300b integrated amplifier that only has an 8 ohm tap.  I’ll be alternately driving it with a 300 W solid-state.  I know, two amplifiers on the complete opposite ends of the spectrum!   They will be placed in a somewhat small room, 16 X 11.  I have had a pair of Thiel 2.3’s for 20 years, and didn’t feel the upgrade bug until they saw all the new technology and scores of glowing reviews.  I also have a Velodyne DD 10 subwoofer, but I’m not sure I will need it.
@millercarbon  The woofer is being 5 feet apart what is one of the factors are used to make the purchase of the Moab over the encore.  Also the extra 2 dB of sensitivity.  Might not get the resolution of the superior drivers in the encore though.  And also, since my room is small, I don’t think I’ll miss the mid bass drivers,  I don’t listen at super loud volumes anymore, I already have some age related hearing loss.  That is on top of high frequency hearing loss from a right ear infection.
@charles1dad I almost ditched the Thiel 2.3’s, bryston 4bsst, and a PrimaLuna prologue 3 for the Woo WA5 with an old pair of fairly cheap Acoustic Research 308 HO’s. The latter is 1/2 the price of the former. It was my first taste of SET in a 2 channel set up.  It left quite a pleasant aftertaste!  Did not even bother hooking up the 300b to the merciless Thiels.  Certainly the best headphone amp I ever listened to. Can’t wait to hear the SET amp with the Moab’s! Sarah McLachlan’s “gloomy Sunday” will be my gold standard test. I suspect I will be an full SET convert. Currently using genalex 300b’s, as I have worn out my Sophia 300bc’s. Would love to get the majestic EML 300b-xls! Maybe the xls will improve on the poor power ratings JA gave it on Stereophile.
@teajay Thanks for the well written review of the Moab in 6moons. Love that website.
Aw man! I just can’t wait for my moabs! Ordered 5 weeks ago. I even ordered a Beresford TC-7220 mkiii to allow me to easily switch between my 300b Woo Audio and my Bryston 4bsst. I hope it does not degrade the sound, however. It looked the best of the amp selectors I looked for. I will be using my Moabs for HT use also, so Dis not want to be fiddling with cables every time I wanted to switch from music to HT. Those 300b’s can be expensive!  Any of y’all use an amp selector?
Oh, and another thing, anyone hear much about the Brisance sub? $2000 for a massive, highly adjustable, and amp included sub seems too good to be true. Also, anyone need warranty work? Eric seems so overworked that I suspect it may take 7 weeks to get any follow up on repairs/replacement.
I think I have figured out Tekton's marketing strategy.  I was put on a waiting list for a Harley-Davidson 883. It was a simple bike, no reason HD could not have produced thousands per year. Nevertheless I had to wait 9 months to receive my purchase. A waiting list creates (potentially artificial) demand and a sense of higher value, the laws of supply and demand comes to mind. Eric will strike when the iron is hot and finally advance supply after the reputation of Tekton is solidified. Smart guy.
