Table suspension - balls or springs?

I've read about the use of squash balls to suspend some vintage tables and ask are what the relative advantages and disadvantages versus springs. It would seem that a sphere may dampen horizontal forces better but, perhaps, fare worse than springs in dampening vertical forces.

Does anyone know the real physics by which one can generally "compare" these two solutions?

I'm not asking which method is better, as implementation can equal if not trump method. I'm just hoping to better understand such approaches to suspension.
