Still liking my PSB Stratus Gold i's

Looks like I am the newbie in this group...bought my gold i's 12 years ago this December. Have since replaced everything else in my system, so that must make these the weak link.

I have a similar affinity to my speakers (also have the upgrade bug)-mine happen to be Snell CIVs, purchased new in 1992 for $2300, also considered the Stratus Golds then, somehow chose between the two, and have had no regrets in the intervening decades.

the ones i liked from back then were the silvers. They sounded better in smaller rooms, however.

What a bargain! I agree with Johnnyb53 that it would take close to $5k to find significantly better speakers.

No reason to "upgrade" from Stratus Golds. They do so much right, and are resolving enough to yield audible benefits with disproportionately priced upgrades upstream.

My main speakers are also big floorstanding Canadians from the same era--Mirage M5si's. They anchor the 7.1 ch HT/surround system. I still marvel at how *right* they sound, and the Stratus Golds have a similar, natural tonal balance, but with an even more transparent midrange. I think you'd have to spend $5000 to get more than a lateral move from your Golds, and even then you'd have to choose from a value-leading manufacturer such as, oh, PSB.

Ten years ago I found the concept of spending $1000 for a pair of speakers ridiculous. What a difference a few years makes, since that was about the price of a pair of PSB Stratus Bronze's back then. Now I find the PSB Stratus series (including the Mini's, which soundstage beautifully and have prodigious bass for their size) to be a wonderful value in the world of high-end speakers.

If you're continuing to find your Stratus Goldi's to be worthy of remaining in your system, consider yourself lucky to have found a speaker at that price that can hold its position for the long term. I haven't heard PSB's latest offerings, but I have the Alpha A/V's and Stratus Mini's and continue to find them to be wonderful speakers for the price. The Canadian trio of PSB, Paradigm, and Totem continue to represent a good position in the price/performance ratio in speakers.
