Sony sacd "custom setting"

Has anybody out there switched the factory setting on the rear of Sony's SCD-777ES from "standard" to "custom"? A warning regarding the increase in frequency associated with custom setting, states potential damage to amp and/or speakers, if used without compatible ampliflier. I would love to try the "custom" setting, but wish to hear from those who have successfully utilized this option.

do a search a www.audioasylum.com look at the hi=rez digital section. You find a lot of discussion. Bottom line most people have used that setting with no problem
It is not a problem, but the best place to call to be sure is your amp manufacturer.

The custom setting makes a HUGE difference.
I OWN A SCD-777ES AND I AGREE WITH "JTINN" THAT IT DOES MAKE A TREMENDOUS DIFFERENCE...IT IS INCREDIBLE. I HAVE IT HOOKED UP TO A THRESHOLD T3 PREAMP AND A PAIR OF THRESHOLD T200 AMPS IN MONOBLOCK FORM. I HAD THE SAME CONCERNS WITH MY EQUIPMENT AND HESITATED AT FIRST BECUASE, AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, THRESHOLD FOLDED A COUPLE YEARS AGO. LUCKILY, BOTH THE PRE-AMP AND THE AMPS ARE CAPABLE OF DC-100KHZ ACCORDING TO THE MANUALS (WIDER RANGE THAN THE SCD-777ES). SO MY ADVICE IS READ THE SPECIFICATIONS IN YOUR MANUALS FOR BOTH PRE-AMP & AMP(S); ITS PRINTED FOR A REASON. IT IS DEFINITELY WORTH IT.
Been using it in custom mode for over a year with tube gear. Not one problem, but I do suggest you check with the manufacturer of your amp and preamp. Regards, Mike
Put it on Custom - huge dofference. I have put it on custom with amps from Adcom to Levinson.
I called Dunlavy Audio and spent almost an hour chatting with John Dunlavy. Talk about customer service! I knew my amp and pre-amp would have no problem with the signal in that they are built to recieve and send that. The speakers were the unknown. I have the SCD-1 and it turns out that Dunlavy is using the same unit in there demo room. John's comment was "let's try it, the worst that could happen is we replace a couple tweeters". I guess the electronics of the cross over is safe, so if your willing to risk your tweeters go for it, assuming your other equipment can handle it. I switched it over seven months ago and it made a difference, not as big as others have reported with the SCD-777ES.
I am a technical dunce. What specifically should I be looking for regarding my amplifiers, preamp, and speakers in order to safely use the custom setting on my 777es?
I believe the frequency response for SACD in the custom mode is 50,000 hz, vs 20,000 hz standard (hearing limit). If I'm wrong on this it will be corrected within minutes by great and misterious powers. The specifications of your remaining componants (from manual, or web site) will quote a frequency response or input frequency (my Kora pre-amp is 10Hz-200Khz and amp is 2-55KHz)
Actually the std setting allows freq upto 50khz to proceed through the player while the custom setting allows frequensies as high as the theoretical limit of SACD : 100khz. Regards, Mike
Not understanding the physics involved, does anyone out there comprehend the theory behind the potential perils lurking within the Sony deck? It seems that often components carry different frequency outputs, among other ratings, yet present no practical danger, other than to one's ears. I run Eidelons with CAT amps. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
