Revel VS Avalon

I am interested in your impressions on the Revel Salons and the Avolon Eidolon's. Thank you

I have only heard the Eidelon's, but it is definetely the best speaker I have ever heard. That is a BIG "ever". I have worked in studios for over 25 years. The Eidelon is the only speaker that truly felt as if the musicians were there with me. I wonder, does Avolon have a center channel speaker for 5 channel and home theater uses the way that Revel does?
I don't think 25 years as a janitor in a recording studio qualifies you to talk about anything but Hefty Trash Bags. I've heard the Eidolon and sure, it's better than Revel but then what isn't? Is it great? If you think that a Yamaha NS-10 is good then the Eidolon is great. Of the speakers I've heard recently, the Silverline Sonata is far more musical and less expensive to boot. I don't mean to be insulting but I think you are an idiot.
joecoherent (ironic username) sounds like the kinda guy you'd not wanna bring along to a listening session (or any other social ocassion for that matter). you're rude and lewd, joe, so nobody cares about yout opinions. on any subject i own eidolons. IMHO, these are the best speakers out there, at any price. (i attend ces yearly, so i've heard lot's of stuff there- including the revel line- and at audio shops all over the usa and europe.) they are, however, brutally revealing and will not sound their best without supierior electronics, the more power the better. to bmpnyc: no, avalon is an audio-only manufacturer; they don't do home theatre. stay tuned, tho, a replacement for the monitor may be in the offing that would be suitable for 2 or 4 video channels.
Pull the corncobs out of your ears Cornfedboy. If you do, you'll hear how the Eidolons really sound: like Cornfed Crap. "IMHO"??? There's a reason your opinion is humble. You're an idiot. Since you bought the speakers I guess you're stuck with them. Look at it this way: the Eidolons double as really nice looking end tables where you can set your cans of Budweiser.
Sounds like Joeincoherent has a bad case of Eidolon envy. So do I. I wish I could afford them.
Hey Jsbail...maybe if you got a job you could! Personally I'd rather have my legs waxed by a third world douche bag like you than have these speakers in my living room. Are you available?
Joecoherent, There is only one idiot here, and it is obviously you. Why not go back to the rock you climbed out from under and leave the thinking to those more inclined to do so.
So....no one appears to have experience with both speakers under any circumstances....certainly not under controled or driven by similar electronics etc. Anyone out there with an intelect to match these speakers....or are all owners of such equipment still in high school comparing who's member is larger?
I have heard both.Neither is the best I have ever heard. Not bad but not the best.Spending large sums gets you braging rights not allways the best sound.
IT'S TOO BAD YOUR HONEST QUESTION CREATED A CONTEST OF INSULTS I HAVE HEARD THE AVALONS AND FIND THEM TO BE TERRIFIC IN TERMS OF SOUND STAGE AND IMAGING--THEY PROBABLY BETTER THE REVELS IN THIS AREA BUT TRAIL IN BASE AND SLAM I OWN THE REVELS IN A TOP NOTCH SYSTEM AND FIND THEM ABLE TO REPRODUCE ALL STYLES OF MUSIC WITH EASE THERE ARE MANY OTHER CHOICES (AND VARIABLES) TO CONSIDER AS THE DEBATE TEAM HAS POINTED OUT ENJOY EITHER SPEAKER ESPECIALLY FOR THE SMALL FORTUNE NEEDED TO OWN THEM
I've heard both, though not in the same room. Both rooms were carefully (and expensively) treated. Both were mated with superb, though different, electronics (Salons: Sony SACD, ML 380S, ML 33H and VTL MB450's, Nordost IC and cables Eidolon: Spectral digital, pre, and power with MIT cables) IMO, the Salon had slightly more dense midrange textures (more weight in lower midrange?), better low frequency extension, and a better dynamic impact. However, I preferred the Eidolons for their superior transparency, holographic imaging, and huge soundstage. Granted, some of this could be attributed to the room or the electronics. I own Avalon Eclipse which I think combines much of the virtues of both the Salon and Eidolon, though with less low frequency extension and dynamic impact than either. Both of the above are great speakers. Jordan
Hello 082288, I compared both of these speakers in the same room with the same electronics and cables. (Spectral-MIT) You have to decide what your priorities are. The Revel will play louder and give you more authority and go lower in the bottom end. The Eidolon is more transparent and can totally disappear. It is more resolute of information and can focus images with a spooky precence that is beguiling. It is also more accurate of instrumental timbre lending a more realistic view into the recording being played. For my taste I found the Eidolon to be the more convincing speaker. In my room it plays louder than I can stand without strain and has plenty of low tight bass. If you have an extremly big room and like to listen at excessive volume levels the Salon would be a better choice for you. Good luck, Tom
Tretnet, Glad to hear from someone who has heard both speakers. I have had a similar experience with the Avolon speakers. If I analyzed aspects individually I could pick out minor weak points, but on the whole, I would be hard pressed to find a better speaker, and happy to own a pair. I wouldn't turn down the Revel speakers either. I would not purchase the Eidelons' until a center channel is developed. That is just my preference.
Bmpnyc, I have heard from good sources that Avalon is planning on making a center channel speaker, just not marketed under the Avalon name. I'm told it will not be finished as well, but will certainly mate well with Avalon products in a home theater set-up (ie. similar frequency balance and polar response). Talk to Lucien at Avalon. No details yet. Good luck.
I've heard both at a dealer with various electronics and the Avalon is outstanding - the Revel wins the ugly contest though, it is without a doubt the ugliest speaker I've ever seen.
I spoke to Lucien several yeasr ago about producing an Avalon center channel. My understanding was thatthey were building one. However that was several years ago and I am still waiting. He did say that they could modify the monitors and test them out.
avalon is building a center channel and sub that will mate with symbols. prototypes were on static display at ces 2001 in the muse suite. kevin halverson designed the sub. the center channel proto used the same drivers as the symbol. BTW, i listened to an ht setup last week with avalon arcus's in front and symbols in rear. with this setup, you don't need a center channel. -kelly
