Replacement drivers for Thiel speakers

Hello Forum!

I am the proud owner of a pair of Thiel CS5i speakers and have been loving them for a few years as the second owner.  It seems that one of my tweeters has gone to the great speaker beyond in the sky, and I'm wondering of there's a replacement source for Thiel drivers.

TIA,

Go to Madison audio ...they have replacements that are actually better...i upgraded a pair 1.2s that had blown tweeters
You can contact this guy that does Thiel repairs. He used to work at Thiel and still does some repairs. He might be able to help you out.

I would first try Rob at the above linked coherentsourceservice.com, if that doesn't work I would consider having the tweeter repaired by Bill LeGall at:

Millersound Speaker Refoaming, Speaker Reconing and Repair Services

Bill is well respected and considered a master of driver repairs. If you go this route you might want to send both tweeters, so that they can be matched.

With Thiel loudspeakers I would caution against using off the shelf replacements. For the earlier Thiel models while the drivers might appear to be off the shelf drivers, they were in fact custom made to JIm Thiel's specifications. Furthermore, these customized drivers were used with specific cross-overs that adjusted for these particular drivers to create a time and phase coherence loudspeaker system that was somewhat unique in the industry. Only a handful of others were willing to attempt such a feat.
Later Thiel models used in house built drivers, but the same cross-over considerations took place.

As a side note; damaged tweeters are often the result of amplifier clipping. The Thiel CS 5's were a notoriously difficult speaker for amplifiers to drive. If you don't have the proper amplification, it's quite likely this could be become a reoccurring issue.

I'm in the same boat trying to reform the drivers for a pair of CS 1.2's. According to Millersound's website Thiel is not one of the brands they service, and there are "no exceptions". Anyone know of someone in the NJ area that might tackle this job? I'd even do it myself if I could find the foam, but is apparently an odd size no one carries, I guess they need to be custom made?

Thanks jafant, I went over to SkyFi’s site but unfortunately they don’t do repairs either. Will contact Rob at CSS, and will stop by the Thiel Owners thread to see what’s happening 😊
