Receiver Volume Issue

I have an inexpensive Pioneer VSX-D409 receiver that I use in the bedroom for evening background music. A couple of years ago the volume control on the unit itself stopped working. However, I was able to change the volume with the remote. Recently, I noticed that the volume will increase by itself while any type of media file is playing.

Can anyone offer an explanation? Thank you kindly.
