Professional Identification help needed!

How on earth would anyone know where YOU bought an amp? What does an auction number have to do with what it says on the amp. You paid for something you didn't look at? You lost me all together, ONCE again I'm pretty thick, but read what you posted.. 


How could anyone answer that question, except with another question.

Indeed. How on earth would one determine what the number one auction site on the planet would be? In the past, listing competitors names would bump postings from certain sites. Thanks again for all the input!

Yes. Norman Laboratories, to my knowledge and research, produced no amplifiers. It was suggested that this may be a Musical Design unit. They have been contacted with photos. Eagerly awaiting a response.  

So it was auctioned on EBay? Why didn't OP say "I bought it on EBay, here is the auction number". That is the weirdest thing, to be able to put in an auction number and find out what's going on an EBay.

I did get an old nuke gyroscope end bearing off eBay, once.

I bought it as it was made from machined beryllium, and no one knew what it was.

As OP suggested, Norman Laboratories appears to only have produced speakers. From what I could find, it's a company that was based in Norman OK in the 70's and 80's and apparently sold in a fairly localized area that included Little Rock AK. Sounds like they were considered audiophile grade speakers for their time.

@oldhvymec Lol. That's exactly what I thought when I read this post at 6:30 this morning! Then again it was 6:30 so I thought I must have read it wrong. Sheesh!

J.H. At Musical Concepts did not recognize the amplifier in question, unfortunately. After looking about, this amp appears to be very similar to a Hafler xl-280 or perhaps a Hafler p-225. Mos-fet count is the same. The speaker terminals appear similar to a number of Heathkit units. Thanks for everyone’s help in this Fact finding quest!

Interesting old amp.
The seller did say that he thought someone had simply put a Norman sticker on it.

1. Why OP put such vague info in the post.

Well Mr Turkey, you sure got an apt name!  How come you missed Christmas?
You did get quite a big box for $399 and it's painted a nice black colour, so that's OK.

Doesn't look anything close to the Hafler XL-280 I have sitting in a closet.
Possibly a different vintage Hafler.

It’s an early 70’s mystery meat amplifier.

Kinda looks like a bogen, but it’s stereo... with more caps than any super tight bogen engineer would ever unwillingly squeeze out of their reluctant backside.

anyway, the lack of a face-plate or even screw holes/mounts for one, says it was always intended for a professional install application.

Which switches around the entire list of potential manufacturers.

The 5 amp fuse suggests an approximate 100 w/pc rating.

I looked in my Orion 2003 edition Blue Book for audio and see no speaker amplifier ever made by Norman. They have quite a lengthy list of speakers.  As someone surmised it looks like a Norman sticker just got placed on this.
