problem w/ 1080i video output mode...

hi. i have a panasonic s97 connected to a pioneer pdp 5050hd plasma via hdmi. when i select video output of either 720p or 1080i i get a flicker of static snow on the screen every minute or so. when i select 480p it does not occur. any insight? faulty dvdp, tv, settings, hdmi cable? any help is very apprecuated. thanks, d.
