Optical or coax?

If there is a choice of using an optical or coax IC, what is the best to use? Are there any advantages of one over the other?

Fairly equal sound quality IMO. One thing I was told and which makes intuitive sense to me is that optical doesn't carry electrical charge while the coax does. HTH JCC3
