Oppo 83 SE wich would be best for my system vs 83

Hi

I would like to know if anyone can share with me, if the SE will be a noticable differece, or marginal over the 83.

I have a Arcam 300 reciever, BDP400 Mirage Sub, Allisons fronts , center and rear speakers. Above average. I'm using the Cambriddge -Azur 540D DVD player, actually very good picture and sound is good, not excellent.( playes NTS & Pal)

I don't need to play SACD or CD, just DVD.
and I want to use the Audio outs to the Arcam.

Question: Will I really notice the Audio sound worth spending the extra $400 or so over the 83R?

I actually not trying to save the $400, just want to know if this makes quality audio sence?

Thanks

Yes, it would be better for you. Also, resale when the 'next big thing' comes along will be at least $200 higher. Another factor will be the audio side when the many Blu-Ray audio stuff starts to be issued this year. BRA will initially be limited to classic disc's like Miles Blue, but many others will follow.
With any decent quality system, the answer is simple. If you are using the analog outputs of the player (as the OP seems to be), get the SE for the improved DACs. If you are using the HDMI or coax/optical output, save your money and get the 83.

Do the analog outputs of any source device give the best audio/picture quality?

I had always thought that HDMI will output the highest bandwidth and quality of signal?!
First, I was speaking only about audio quality. Video quality is identical in the two players.

Second, HDMI will be superior for a digital display, such as with modern flat panel devices.

I agree with Kr4. If you plant to use oppo 7.1 analog for the sound and HDMI for video then go for the oppo 83se. Otherwise, regular Oppo 83 will be fine.
Kal,

Just to clarify, (please excuse my noobness)so having the audio coming from the 7.1 analog outputs will have a higher quality signal than using HDMI?

This would be news to me and I have capabilities for both in my current set-up. I just thought that the simplicity of using HDMI, and the newer technology advantages, would trump the old 7.1 analog outputs. If using the 7.1 analog outputs for audio, and HDMI for video, would allow the best sound quality, I will need to re-wire my HT accordingly!

I did not say that and I do not believe that. (Some do.)

What I said was that IF you are using the analog outputs of the player, the 83SE is recommended over the 83. Because I can, I use HDMI.

Oppo 83se is a very good blu-ray player to pair up with older av processor via 7.1 analog. To me, I am still keeping my Classe SSP-60 since most of the newer AV processor is not up to my taste, yet. Admitted, there are some very good one from Krell or Classe but my budget is not allow me to do so. Hopefully, will be able to buy one for half price from audiogon someday in the future. For now, I am very happy with this combo Classe ssp-60 and Oppo 83se Nuforce edition. They will stay in my system for several more years.
I believe your focus is on movie soundtracks via analog... would just stick with the 83. Now if you were interested in better music performance then yes, the SE would be a substantial improvement as far as I know having read user and pro reviews. Also, within the 'regular' 83 the dedicated 2ch analog outs are slightly different than the L/R anolog outs of the 7.1 section. Be patient and see what they have up their sleeve.
Is there any difference in DAC's used for SACD in 83 vs 83SE? If so, is there an audible difference in performance to justify the price differential? Will be using coax out for DVD's.

I believe the general consensus is that if you are ONLY using the digital out there is no difference in the performance of the two units. The upgrade with the 83SE is strictly associated with the 2 channel and multi-channel analog outputs.

Yes. The DACs for all the formats are different.

If so, is there an audible difference in performance to justify the price differential?
Yes, see http://stereophile.com/musicintheround/music_in_the_round_41/#

Will be using coax out for DVD's.
Not HDMI?
