New mat for Rega P6?

I had a Rega P8. I ended up just placing an old, thick LP on the platter, and using that as a mat.  I also just placed the LP directly on the platter.  Lots of other options, and I don't think there's a wrong choice, as I didn't hear much of a difference regardless of what was used, so you may as well use something cheap. 

Try a Herbies. They make them in all thicknesses. Money back if not satisfied. It will change the sound, maybe for the better or maybe for the worse. Everyone gets into an uproar when I say this, but if the static is to a point where it’s making playing records unenjoyable, Gruv Glide will stop it dead. I had unending static issues when I had my Linn and GG cured it. Up to you.

Herbies or Achromat (3,5mm).

I had a Rega RP-6. Very nice tt. I have tried lots of mats, everything from soft felt mats to carbon fiber ones. I recently got hold of a tt mat called MyMat, which was made by one of A'gon's members. This is the most neutral (read best sounding) mat I ever owned. Unfortunately this member quit making it. I've got Herbie's mats on my two P-9s. Very pleased with them - - and the absence of static.

I have a Herbie's Way Excellent II but Herbie's makes a different mat more suitable for acrylic platters called the Grungebuster. I believe the Rega has an acrylic platter, so the Grungebuster might improve sonics but I doubt you would notice any difference with the Way Excellent from just putting the record directly on the platter. Synergistic Research recently came out with a mat (and weight) but like all of there products, it's expensive.

I use a Herbie’s Way Excellent mat on my P10’s ceramic platter. I know the P6 has a different platter so your results may be different. I actually bought the Grungebuster and the Way Excellent mat to compare them knowing that I could return one or both. I liked the Way Excellent for sound quality much better than the stock and Grungebuster mats. The Grungebuster mat sounded flat and dead. Even though the P6 has a different platter from my P10, I recommend trying the Way Excellent mat and return it if doesn’t work out. Other mats that I’ve tried incude the Audio Technica Japanese paper mat, and a white leather mat.

@smatsui I tried using the Way Excellent II on a Clear Audio with an acrylic platter. There was no difference between the mat and the platter. However, different tables could render different results.

After you have examined all the various mat choices, take a look at the upgrades from Groovetracer. A friend has done the reference sub-platter upgrade and just recently got the Delrin platter for a current P3. The sub-platter, the Herbie's mat, better belt, better support stand all were incremental changes. The Delrin platter is a complete game changer (no mat is used with the Delrin platter). The tonal balance was shifted from a very upper midrange forward presentation to a more balanced sound with a massive increase in detail. You will perceive much more information than you thought could exist on late 50's and 1960's jazz recordings. It's amazing what they were able to capture on those tapes with the technology of the era. That same friend points out that the way microphones were made back then may be reason. They had huge diaphragms compared to todays products.

We sort of got off topic because the actual issue was static, which the OP presumed came from the felt mat. Maybe so, but a Herbies mat or Delrin platter may not cure that issue. That’s why I recommended Gruv Glide if the static was that bad. Anyway…

@chayro nevertheless, a change in the mat will mean a change in sound. I've never used Gruv Glide but I'm assuming that it won't change the sound so point taken.

I use a Herbie’s mat on my Planar 8. It can be ordered in the same thickness (2mm) as the stock Rega felt mat. I perceive zero downside in terms of sonic performance.

I neglected to address the primary reason/issue for your post. Static reduced significantly. Unscientific, but estimate 75-80% less.

The Herbie's Way Excellent mat did reduce static for my P10 setup and it didn't affect VTA.  This mat is much less expensive and better to my ears for sound quality than the Herbie's Grungebuster mat that sucked the life out of the music.  Between the WE mat and ultrasonic cleaning my LPs, static is no longer a problem.  IMO, this mat is a nice replacement for the felt mat on Rega TTs.  Other brand TTs may provide different results.

Double sided tape fixed the 'Static Cling' of my P10 matt 👍 

Double sided tape will fix the clinging issue but it won't eliminate or reduce static.

Thanks everyone OP here and I went with the Herbie's made for the Rega 6. It solved the problem 100%. I am still trying it out to see if it made a difference in sound. So far I haven't heard a difference I can say for sure. Maybe it needs more break-in?!?
