Need Help buying headphones and head amps

All, Thank you very much for the information above. It was very useful. I am reviewing Head Fi, Audio Consultants, The Cable Company, suggested headphones, DAC's, etc and hope to make some decisions shortly. Thanks again for all of the above suggestions. Audiogon is a great resource thanks to all of your posts.

don't forget check out sony mdr7506,they are studio monitoring headphones,pretty cool sounding.Not so expensive ,but they give true sound.Using beyerdynamic a1 amp with them and grado ps1000.For quality sounds also important DAC in this chain

Running Senn 600 from Schiit Asgard 2 using Dragonfly2 USB DAC out of my Macbook Air.

Definitely well within the budget and sounds pretty good to me. I'd recommend upgrading the Senn 600 cable, however.

Cable Company, as Zd mentions, will lend headphones. Schiit has a 15 day return though there is a restocking fee. Music Direct has a great 60 day return policy...could get the Dragonfly there or at Audio Advisor (AA has a 30 day return).

You have received some good tips from earlier posters. Hope your nephew finds something he enjoys.

Head Fi is a great source of information but is a bit overwhelming, there is a lot of info out there. It takes a while to get used to it and also the tenor of the conversations which tend to be a younger age centric- than what you encounter on Agon.
What's hot right now is a tube amp from a company called Garage1217, the model is called a Project Ember. It has a feature that is not seen with speaker amps, in that you can roll almost any tube you want in it.
I have been using Sennheiser HD700s for headphones and can recommend them to my generation of speaker listeners. They are well balanced, but younger people seem to crave more pronounced bass, making the HD 650s popular.
The advice promoting auditioning is always sound. The Ember and the street price for HD700s comes in under a grand but just barely. Also there is no DAC with this set up.

in chicago/evanston/hinsdale audio consultants would be a good place to audition heapdphones and amps--they have alot of grado and sennheiser at different price ranges

Sennhesier(laidback) and Grado(forward) are polar opposites sound wise and in what amplifiers they pair well with; however both fall toward the warm side of things. My preferred brand is Ultrasone and I'd make sure to get them on the audition list for another data point(brighter sound.) I've been out of the headphone market for some time but I would recommend the site I started my audiophile journey with back in 2008, Head-Fi.

Take a look at the Topping TP32ex. You can find them on Amazon. It has a
good Dac, USB input, plus a digital coax and analog input as well. It is not
only a headphone amp, but is also a 50 watt per side digital power amp to
drive speakers if so desired. I have it and it sounds great.

Read headfi.com it's what audiogon is just for headphone listening. Many smaller companies offer the best stuff. Many of the reviewers compare tons of items. The relatively lower costs results in many who build a collection and can compare in ways that we often can't here with high $ speakers, etc. Cheers,

Sennheiser HD600 or HD650 with a Bottlehead Crack amp. Total investment is probably about $600. The only caveat is you have to build the headphone amp but to me that just makes it more fun.

With a budget of $1000, you should be able to get something very good. The only problem is that there are so many choices, it can be overwhelming. I can give you 2 pretty good options. First, is The Cable Company. If you don't already know who they are, Cable Co's speciality is that they have a huge inventory of demo components to lend out. You can have them send you 3 or 4 pairs of headphones and amps to match, and you can try them all at once. They will give you good advice based on your needs, and not what they have in stock that needs to get moved. I've been doing business with them since the early 90's, and are one of the most reputable businesses I've ever dealt with. If you pick something that they don't have in stock, they'll let you keep the demo gear until it comes in. If you can't already tell, this would be my first choice.

You can also try Headroom. Web site is headphone.com. If anything, its a great resource. They have a huge inventory and a lot of user reviews from customers on their web site. I don't know them well enough to take advice from them, but they do have an excellent reputation and you can learn a lot on their web site.

If you already know what you want, you can try musicdirect.com. They're mostly known as an online company, but they are in Chicago and you can actually go there if you live locally. They're not a bad place to do business with, but they are a very high pressure sales oriented business. They try and sell you want they want you to buy.

With headphones, I like to try them first because the fit has to be right. So even if you read some good reviews, the ergonomics play a big part in the decision.
