My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@whitecamaross Is it the new top Vanta line of the Gryphon cables you are expecting? Very interesting. I’ve just switched from a VIP Reference cable (from their previous top cable line) between my preamp and Mephisto to a High Fidelity IC. The HFA cable in my view has more resolution.
@whitecamaross You got me scared a little bit by what you said about the DAW and Mephisto. But it is too late: the mighty Mephisto will be brought to my place tomorrow:)  I refuse to believe that a better amp can make my system sound worse, but you may be right about the possible flaws, and the fact that with Mephisto they will be more apparent.
@whitecamaross Have you had any experience with High Fidelity cables? I am now looking for a set of balanced ICs to go between my pre and Mephisto and a set of new speaker cables. I know, that  Rick Schultz had some issues with his speaker cables in the past, but corrected them with the current products. I tried an HFC Ultimate power cord some time ago and was very impressed with overall transparency and resolution of that cable.
What other brands of ICs and speaker cables can you recommend for Mephisto / Sasha combo?
@whitecamaross You are so right, when you talk about how getting a new component is just the beginning, not the end!!! My Daw was brought to me 3 months ago, and I already have new amp, trying a new dac, speaker cables, IC, preamps, power cords and new tubes for my dac and phono stage. I even had to check setup of my TT and change some settings, and I am still not happy with the way my vinyl rig sounds with the DAW and Mephisto:) This is a nightmare (financially) and fun at the same time. BTW, my amp has probably less than 20 hours, but I hear some improvement every single day. My preamp is definitely not up to the task now, so I’m going to audition Pandora and CH L1 next week. I also want to get MSB Reference at the same time and try it direct, the preamp section in MSB Reference and Select is very good.
I salute your efforts to make the Mephisto sing. Please, keep trying and do not give up.  Your experience is unique and is very valuable for many of us, who do not have access to this broad range of components.
Wow, what a thread! whitecamaross, thank you for this and your video channel. I am waiting for delivery of my WA Sasha DAWs. Currently I have a Border Patrol S20 EXD amplifier. It’s a 18 wpc SET amplifier based on 300B tubes. I tried Border Patrol with Sashas at my place, and even WA people were surprised at the outcome. Of course, I am aware that a low power SET amplifier is normally not paired with Sashas, so I will try  to audition as many amps as possible before making the final choice.
My top 3 choices for Sasha DAW so far have been CH A1.5, Pass Labs XA 160.8 and Lamm M1.2 Reference. Lamm hybrid amp is a regular partner for WA speakers. But I have not found any examples of CH and WA pairing. What is your view on CH Precision amps in general and their use with WA speakers?

Thanks in advance,
Aziz

@whitecamaross, thanks for your response about CH amps. My brief exposure to CH A1 amp was a positive one. It was not with Sasha DAW, but with VSA VR-55 speakers during my home audition. The amp was quite musical and engaging. As opposed to Dartzeel amp, which was absolutely flat sounding and boring. Although I must say  I have not done a direct comparison between CH and Darztzeel (Dartzeel was with WA and CH with VSA).I am a tube guy, so I have high hopes for Luxman and Pass Labs. The WA distributer in my country also carries Pass Labs. Obviously he pushes this brand. According to him Pass is the only transistor brand that can be tolerated by tube guys:)
Would you say that Luxman sound signature is close to Pass? I really want to try Luxman amp after all your videos.
Thank you, WC, good to know. 200.8 or xs with a corresponding pre is too much money. Maybe a 160.8. Luxman is now on top of my list.
@whitecamaross Have you had any experience with MIT speaker cables or Transparent? My WA dealer also carries MIT and recommends them for Sashas. I wanted to try Transparent first, but according to the dealer the MIT technology is far superior:)
Thanks, Aziz.
WC, congratulations on your recent Mephisto acquisition! I’ve heard from several very experienced audiophiles, that Mephisto is not just one of the best, but probably is THE BEST stereo SS amplifier manufactured today. I have a choice between Antileon EVO and Mephisto. The difference in price in my case is around 12K Euro. I think I’ll go for Mephisto:) What would you do if you were in my shoes?
WC, I finally received my DAW in Quartz about a week ago:).  It's amazing how well it plays with my SET amp.  I know it shouldn't, but it does!  Anyway, now starts a quest for that perfect dream amplifier.  If you were in my shoes, what would be the 3 amplifiers you would try first?  Budgetwise I would like to keep it below $30k.

WC, do you think, that Gryphon Essence Stereo with its 2 x 50W @ 8 Ω, 2 x 100W @ 4 Ω, 2 x 190W @ 2 Ω specs would be enough to drive DAW? This is the latest addition to the Gryphon range of Class A amps and is highly recommended to me by the people I kind of trust. My room is not big, and I do not listen at high spl levels.
This is really disturbing news. Have you tried contacting Steve Williams or Ron Resnick? I really enjoy WBF community - there are many people there with interesting systems and lots of experience to share.
WC, do you use the flat preset mode on your Shure microphone? I have the same mic. Unfortunately, it is not an ideal recording device. In my experience, it brightens the sound, makes everything sound a bit thinner. Anyway, you should download the Shure Motif app to your iPad and configure the mic prior to a recording. I think the best preset mode is flat and you can also try different polar patterns, e.g. stereo vs raw mid-side. Also, the mic supports recording in landscape mode.
I’ve had Gryphon Antileon EVO Stereo in my room for one week with Sasha DAW. It is unforgettable experience and is the best amp I’ve heard so far! I compared it head to head to CH A1.5. They are very different. CH is not cold, it’s very delicate and musical. HF are very good. But after Gryphon it sounds too polite. With Gryphon music just jumps out of the speakers. It is difficult to explain in words, you have got to hear it:) And the base is simply at another level. Since then, I’ve tried Accuphase, Aesthetix Atlas, Grandinote and plan to audition Momentum next week, but the Gryphon sound is deeply burned in my brain now, and what I really want to audition is Mephisto.
viber,
CH amps do not have bias adjustment, they have negative feedback adjustment from 0 to 100%.  I tried all settings up to 75%, it does not change the character of the amp, but 0% setting is the preferred one, IMHO. When I say polite, I mean mainly less dynamic, but it can also mean sweet to a much lesser degree. CH is definitely a more forgiving amp compared to Gryphon, but I am not sure it’s a good thing:)
WC
Very sad about your DAW departure:(((What is your view about Gryphon Mephisto and DAW? Is it too much of an amp for DAW?

Well, EVO is certainly not forgiving too. I’ve heard it in my system with my components both with vinyl and digital. If I wanted a forgiving amp, I would go with CH:)
@thieliste you may be right about the CH preamp. I agree: it is a more modern and more technically advanced design compare to Pandora, and you have better upgrade path: one L1 per channel plus 2 power supplies. If I have to go blind, I would choose L1 over Pandora. Another very interesting option in my view - MSB Reference DAC with preamp module. I auditioned it last week and it was a revelation going with MSB direct into Aesthetix Atlas Eclipse. The preamp is fully analog, it’s a passive unit with constant impedance. Think about it: the dac with modules is about $50k. And you need about $30k to get a sota preamp like CH or Pandora.
@whitecamaross Please, check this thread on WBF forum:

Here the guy put his Mephisto on an Artesania rack, but he had to remove the amps’ feet. Maybe he has a different model? Although it looks the same.
Congratulations on Boulder 2150 amp. It is a beast of the amplifier and and a worthy competitor to Mephisto. The specs are quite impressive, but the stated 1000W power rating is the peak power rating, which is not the same as Gryphon’s 175W RMS power rating. This article explains the difference: https://www.mwrf.com/technologies/systems/article/21120862/whats-the-difference-between-rms-and-peak...
Also, the topology is not clear: it consumes only 250W vs Mephisto’s 700W, so it cannot be the same true class A amplifier as Mephisto is.
The fact that Boulder is in mono configuration and Mephisto is just a stereo version is enough to compensate for the difference in PCs. Let us not forget, that the Boulder is 2 times more expensive than Gryphon for this very reason. Although I own Mephisto and would like it to win, I must admit the Boulder does sound amazing. Thank you Jay for this opportunity and I look forward to tomorrow’s videos and more surprises from you next year:))
I also would like to try Center Stage 1.5 feet under Mephisto. Unfortunately, they are just 38 mm tall, I measured Mephisto’s feet and their height is almost 50 mm. So you will not be able to put them under Mephisto without removing the stock feet. I understand that you can remove the stock feet by hand, there is a guy from WBF forum, who did it. Still I am not sure I want to do it.
Have you considered Devore Fidelity Orangutan O/96 speakers? Could be a good choice for a second pair of relatively affordable speakers and a good partner to your future tube amp.

Interesting, I often use Medium, especially late at night, which sounds quite good to my ears, but never tried Low. I think the manual says it is just for keeping the amp ready for listening without initial warm-up. Does it sound as good as Medium or High setting?

@whitecamaross I understand from your YouTube comments, that you use Tidal MQA to source the videos. Try Qobuz if Rossini supports it. I have both and compared Tidal MQA and Qobuz Hirez many times. Qobuz always wins, at least in my system.
Inna, Gryphon and WA is a very good match. In my experience, Gryphon amps sound very dense (meaty) and slightly dark, which suits WA speakers due to their relative brightness. There are many very happy owners of big systems with both brands on WBF forum.
Just wait till Jay finds an optimum position for the new speakers, put them on spikes etc.
I would be very careful playing with these resistors. According to my WA dealer, the change of resistors is not recommended by WA. It is there just for the extreme cases, where nothing else works due to a very unusual / problematic room.
So many posts about GTA here? Why??? 🙃

Jay, I really would like to know your opinion about High Fidelity cables. I’ve compared an HFC XLR and Gryphon VIP, which I put between my preamp and Mephisto - no contest, the HFC XLR is more resolving and has somewhat less grain. But the biggest difference is the soundstage, it is much much bigger and have a certain 3D effect, which is quite unusual.  It is as if musicians are bigger and closer to you.  This effect bothers me a little, what if it becomes tiresome in the long-term?
I know, you have not auditioned HFC cables in your system, but maybe, you’ve heard something from Mike or other experienced audiophiles. What is your view about this brand: snake oil or the real thing? Thanks.
Based on your description, they might seem similar to Synergistic Research - big sound, 3d effect that wraps around you.
This is similar to what I hear.  I do not know what Synergistic Research do to achieve such an effect, High Fidelity use magnets, which they claim somehow direct electrons to the center of the conductor.  It does not sound very scientific to me, but all I care is the end result.  The big question: is it OK for a cable to have such a dramatic effect on the sound reproduction?
Thanks, owning both in the long run is certainly the best option. I think, I’ll get one of their XLRs and pass on the speaker cables. Adding 2 High Fidelity cables in my system is probably too much.  Will do further testing with my new preamp (CH L1) when it arrives.
BTW, I preferred CH L1 in my room to Pandora. Both were very good, Pandora had more slam and a bit wider soundstage, CH was better for longer listening sessions.

CH Precision L1 sounds amazing with Mephisto. It is as if a preamp is not the system at all. This is of course in my system, someone’s else result may be different. I really hope that Jay will try CH gear one of these days. Maybe even the new 10 series!
https://www.ch-precision.com/ch-cat/series/10-series/

We have a local audiophile, who is very happy with his CH M10s and Alexx V. He has no complaints about bass performance or any other aspect of CH - Wilson combo. I am not sure, if Marty tried other preamps with M10, maybe there is some lack of synergy between Soulution and CH - who knows?
