MQA - All the Gory details over at Stereophile

In case anyone is interested, Stereophile just barfed up a large collection of documentation on MQA.  I've already done my best to prevent that conversation from being constructive, as I always do, but if anyone else wants to add to it, there or here, please do!

That is a pretty good article! :)

I'm not sure about some of the gross arguments about file size and resolution. They seem pretty compact to me, but I have no way of really doing a comparison except to look at what 2L is publishing and comparing file sizes, and what my DAC tells me it's playing.

Still, that's probably the best source of technical data so far about how exactly it works, and where the trade offs are.

I thought the exact compression points were more malleable than the author states, but it's all meaningless unless it has benefit I can hold in my hands.

I have some 2L Blu Ray recordings as they were a Pioneer in Blu Ray Audio but haven't played the much
@mahler123

I agree that the samples of music did nothing for me, but then, I'm afraid none of the samples at 2L did all that much for me, in any format. :)

Maybe it's just not my type of recording.

@mahler123:2L

has some, but I don't know about the provenance, that is, how well the ADC encoding was compensated for. I believe they just took existing very hi rez PCM and converted.  The file size reduction is pretty impressive, that I can vouch for.

You can go listen for yourself here: http://www.2l.no/hires/

Otherwise, a lot of the comments posted at Stereophile are along the same lines you are asking about. :)

Best,
