I'm not sure how old, or long in the tooth, my Mcintosh CD player is, but I'm considering replacing it with an Ayon CD-10. Does the technology change that much to make it worth the while?
I'd keep the Mac unless you've had serious issues with it. It should be readily serviceable and if you want to update it in any way, you could try using a more modern outboard DAC.
