Active. You will never look back. Done right this always has much better driver integration and much lower IM distortion than an equivalent passive design.

I agree with Shadorne, go active. I have the M&K S-150 THX passive and they are the best speakers I have heard to date. They replaced a pair of Spendor S8e for $1000 less. If I didn't already have an investment in a pair of Bryston 7B-SST monoblocks I would have bought the active versions. When you consider total system costs, active will save you quite a bit of money.
Which active speakers do you plan on buying, the S-150 THX (consumer), MPS-2510P (pro) or the MPS-1611P (pro)? I've been told that the S-150 and the MPS-2510 are identical.
I also suggest you use an M&K subwoofer. I've been very happy with the MPS-5310.
