Lumin Ap on Lumin players - not so good?

Anyone use Luman ap??

got a new luman device and find the Lumin ap as being difficult to work with.  Playlists seems to require lots of management vs Roon, Qobuz.  Also hard to figure ap out.  Seems very awkward to use.

design of ap doesnt seem to be very good.  Guidance is limited.  Very disappointed.

Crap in.
Crap out.
Might as well spend up for Roon.
But then you could do that with a Ras Pi.
If you are a Roon  user then there is no need to use the LUMIN  app. LUMIN website has a pretty big explanation on how to use the app which I found to be reasonably well thought out
I looked at lumin  manual, i’ll chk website.  I wanna be happy with lumin ap.

Lumin manual cant be downloaded, how strange is this?  Maybe there is a way, i m not too bright.  Mom dropped me on my head when young, my guess.
@jumia I'm guessing you've read through the Playlist section of the Lumin Online Manual. But the following might make it a little easier to understand what is being described in the manual.

First of all, you need to consider the current list of tracks shown in the playlist area to be a "working list". In other words, any changes you make to the working list are temporary and your current state of things. But changes are not saved until you ask the app to save changes. Kind of like working in a word processor that doesn't save anything until you click the save button.

Clicking the save button will save the "working list" into a playlist file with the name you specified at save time. If the name is the same as something that already exists, it will overwrite it. If the name is different then it will save the "working list" into a new playlist file, and leave the old playlist file unchanged. Kind of like opening a text document and saving changes into a new file, making a copy.

Also, the saved playlist files are saved on your phone/tablet, and not on your Lumin device. Only the current "working list" is stored on the device, so it shows up when you switch between different phones/tablets.

You can put both your local music and music from a streaming service like Tidal or Qobuz into a single Lumin playlist.
Can playlists from roon, qobuz be imported to lumin?
I see qobuz/roon playlists on right side of lumin ap but it seems fixated on going back and playing only songs listed in left column after i play a song within lumin, from right side from a qobuz list.

i have to manually and individually set up new playlists in lumin ap?
I used the Lumin app for a while and thought it was OK, but once an issue with BubbleUPnP was fixed, I was happy to return to that. It's a pretty nice OpenHome client. I can see that some audiophiles might prefer the Lumin app, and some (like me) will prefer BubbleUPnP.

However, for a smooth and pleasant experience, I'd definitely recommend Roon. To me, its extra features and user friendliness are well worth the annual charge.
There are 3 or 4 major things I don't like about the Lumin app but I accept it because I like the sound of the devices and it's not like the app doesn't work - I think it works fine but the ergonomics are bad.
The dumbest part about the app to me is how small the search area is and how it just seems to be shoehorned into the upper right of the screen.
@jumia Roon playlists cannot be interacted with from within the Lumin app, or vice-versa. The two apps don't know about each other, and both of them save playlist data within their own app. Roon has a way to export playlist data to a file, but there's no way to import that into the Lumin app on your phone/tablet as far as I know.

You can add the contents of a Qobuz playlist into the "working set" just like you load any other music. And save any changes you make to the "working set" back to Qobuz. See "Qobuz music streaming" in the online manual for more details.

(You mention being able to see Roon playlists in the Lumin app, but I'm not aware of this being possible.)
Omg,  whats the point if playlists dont work.  Creating new playlists all the time.  What a MESS!

Lumin ap is worthless.
I understand frustrations with learning new software and hardware.  I am past the stage of wanting to endlessly tweak all the options available and much more in the mode of wanting ease of use.

However, I disagree posting that Lumin App is a mess and worthless.  Basically it is something different than other software and just requires a bit of usage of its features to make navigating pretty simple.  I have a Lumin X1, Qobuz and Lifetime Roon and do like Roon library management, but when critically listening, I use the Lumin App.  I believe sound quality is a bit better with the Lumin App over Roon.  Roon is very convenient and easy to use, but there is a cost for it.   I have made my own playlists on the App, but also am able to easily see new music on Qobuz and music I have added to my library from Qobuz via Roon and new music to my server hard drive.   You do not have to make new playlists all the time and can modify existing saved ones if you wish.

You do not have to use the App, which is FREE, and instead use another program, but most likely you will be paying for the other software, such as Roon.   I believe Lumin to be open to suggestions and responsive to customer questions and issues.  Peter Lie of Lumin participates on a number of popular forums and is an excellent resource for all things Lumin, but also gives suggestions on audio not directly Lumin.
I too am a Roon lifer using qobuz.
But when i use Lumin app and initially saw my qobuz playlists on right side in all their glory i was happy.

and then i played first song from qobuz playlist within the lumin ap, sounded real good, and when it was over it skipped over into a lumin song list on the left side.  I couldnt get ap to continue to play from a selected qobuz playlist displayed in lumin ap that showed all the songs listed out.  I tried and tried but i am dumb.  It was so cruel to have it work this way.
I much prefer BubbleUPnP.  It's pretty basic, but a lot easier to use and much more intuitive.  The only thing I use the Lumin app for is Radio Paradise.  I haven't been able to figure out how to get to it from BubbleUPnP.  App is free, a license is less than 5 bucks if you want to get rid of ads.
jumia,

If I understand you correctly, you wish to add more than one playlist from Qobuz to play in the App.  You can do so.  The left hand list you see is the active loaded music to play.  When that list plays through or you tire of that assortment playing , you can press the trash can icon on bottom of the list and you get prompt asking if you wish to clear the playlist.   Selecting Yes does not trash your Qobuz Playlists, only clears the active selected music.  You can also add music to the active playlist from your Qobuz Playlists and/or music from your stored files.  Essentially you have control to edit and create custom playlist in the App.  You can clear that or if you wish to save that playlist, you select the edit button (far left button) at bottom of the play list.  It will prompt you to name it and save it.  To see these App saved Playlists, select the music note icon on the bottom of the playlist.  You can then select that playlist to play with the window that opens with note icon, download icon gives option to overwrite and save modified playlist where you may have added or deleted music to the playlist or save to your Qobuz playlist.

If you want to add additional music to listen to from your Qobuz playlist, you can do so even while your first selection is playing.  To do so, open your Qobuz playlists shown in the App and press down on the playlist you wish to add.  The screen will show an arrow on top of file icon which immediately adds new playlist to begin playing, the arrow inside of file will insert the playlist into the order of the active playing list, and arrow at bottom inserts additions at end of current actively playing music.

I strongly suggest taking some time to experiment with the App.  It provides you wide choices including just temporarily playing selections to saving as customized playlists within the App. I think once you get some experience with the options, you will change your current view of it.

Good luck.

Thanks, great detailed comment, very helpful

so it appears songs must flow thru list in leftmost panel. And any playlist detail seen on right side can not be played - although one song at a time can be played. And to get each list detailed on right side from qobuz into lumin, it requires manual effort one list at a time.  Ap Sounds great but design is very poor.

further seems i cant play albums from qobuz, only one song at a time.

To me this is sooooooooo screwed up.

My experience has been you can add music to the music playing in the left panel.   You can add the whole album by press selecting the album or single tap music change view for all the songs and select those you want to add.  If you add using the arrow on top of the file icon, that selection immediately plays whether individual song(s) or whole album.
No seems u have to select songs one at a time.  Will not play fullalbum

horrible
You have read the Lumin Online Manual, especially sections 5 and 6 as it relates to Lumin App, correct?   I suggest you actually use the manual for each shown subsection with your unit to experience what happens.

I suspect you may want to specifically try changing your Operation settings for Tap on Song List and Tap to Play in Playlist in Settings for Lumin App.  As I noted prior, I can add whole album to left side playlist. I have mine set to Double Tap and Play Later for Tap on Song List.
I have had 4 different Lumin Players over the last 7 years and love the Lumin App.  It is easy to use.

Just got a Lumin T2. Apparently I am dumb as well. Is there a way to get the Lumin app to just play through my Tidal favorite songs advancing to the next song automatically?

I am brand new to Lumin and also find the concept of playlists frustrating. And I have been reading the sparsely written manual.

Call tech supp in usa 🙄and ask them to explain.  Its a pain. Guidance is better but its a pain.

Some nice fella from the Lumin Streamer fans Facebook group helped me with this  I needed to be one level back, at the folder level, not in the actual Tidal favorite song list. See below…

I just set the Tidal playlist and my Lumin plays all of it.

To play all the songs in a list:

- go to the folder of the list you want, do not enter the folder where you see individual tracks
- select the folder by holding on to it
- click the play icon farthest to the right

It will clear all previous songs in the Lumin queue and play your playlist.

Lumin queue will hold like 2k tracks and then you can’t play new tracks till you clear that queue.

The same works for playing whole album etc.

Hello

can anyone help

new LUMIN T2 user.

it’s hooked up to a seagate 8TB full of music, DSD and PCM.

when I browse the folders and choose a song and tap, it plays just the one song and does NOT complete the album.

is the fix the same as what’s described above, which may have been for other sources such as tidal where this is a local hard drive plugged directly in, and that’s the ONLY music source Being used.

@tubesrule

You need to HOLD DOWN your finger on the ALBUM thumbnail not the SONG. You will see a small menu pop up while you are holding your finger down. 4 small ICONS with arrows and lines will pop up. Click the first  ARROW/LINE ICON. All the songs should populate the playlist. Also, read the manual.

@ojc Lumin devices support multiple music streaming protocols, so there is more than one way to get music to play through them. I am guessing you probably ended up using AirPlay to stream music direct from the Qobuz app to your Lumin T2. AirPlay will resample the audio data if you are attempting to stream higher resolution audio files—this is a function of AirPlay and not specifically Qobuz or Lumin.

Regarding the SBooster, it will void your warranty to do that sort of modification.

The above comment says to read the manual to use the lumin app. No way, you should not need to read and learn a manual to use an app. The app is terribly awful and less than intuitive. Lumin designers fell far short designing this app.

t2 is very nice but the app Interface sucks. The app may be a hell of a lot better than roon, but it sucks. I used it a month or two ago and now I’m too stupid to remember all the intricacies how works now.

Lumin needs to make some cosmetic changes to the interface to make it easier to use. What is wrong with these people. Sure they can use it no problem, but it’s an awful awful learning curve and then it’s awkward to use.

I have read through all of the helpful suggestions in the forum. G(,uess what I’m more confused than when I started.. Ok guys here’s the deal. I have the Lumin D2. Apparently this app is the same for all models. Maybe some of you guys look at the thing and say oh I get this. I had a teacher once who was so clever no one knew what he was talking about.A lot like the guy who created this app. Okay from the beginning. I have the tidal music service. Clever Art was able to get his tidal play list to show up in the app. Let the confusion begin. This playlist has all my songs but in front of these there are numbers in no special order and often the same number. WTF. Ok l’ll just start at the first song and I can at least listen to the songs Pressing on another song if I want to skip. Right play the first song and settle back and listen to the others. Shuts off . Ok I’ll go to the selections lit and instruct it to play the next song. No way. Get this one day a list appeared when I scrolled left. Order was different but the numbers ran 1 2 3. Have no idea how it got there but it played the tunes one after another. I can live with this. Next evening came to play my list…..it’s gone but of course the list that does nothing is still there. Another WTF in fact several.By the way I didn’t erase the whole list list. I know what a F…ing trash can is. Now, I don’t give a you know what about Roon or BubbleUpnP or anything else. We have our funny looking list in the App.So how do we create the list with 1st 2nd song.able to ply one after another. Remember use K.I.S.S. Methodology. May be also how to place a new song into that list. How to delete songs. Any little tricks we can use would be appreciated. I accidentally held down one of the album covers and a bunch of funny little squares and lines popped up. My third WTF. I was a teacher for 34 years. I am willing to bet if Knew how to run this app I could write a set of step by steps that you can follow. Never assume that everyone should get it if you do. End of rant Art

tah, if your playlist is in the right hand panel of the app, you need to move it to the left hand panel. Select one track on the right, stick a finger on it until it’s highlighted. Then go to the bottom of the screen, select the icon with the ’check mark’ in it, that will highlight all your songs. then go to the bottom of the app screen again, the left icon with load your selection on top of everything previously in the lefthand panel, another loads your selection at the bottom of the lefthand panel, yet another will load your selection to the lefthand panel and erase anything else that was previously there. Play with it some. This is how my T2 works, hope your device is similar.

Hold your finger on a song for a moment, deleting it will be an option. I think in the right panel, might be both.

Be nice just be able to sit down with someone like yourself and go through things. I’m really a very visual person. Will give you suggestions a go. Thxs Art

To dznutz Hey,the long dissertation was mine. We talked before concerning your M.L 13A  You also steered me in the right direction to getting my D2 up and running. Tip of the iceberg  man if you read my rant just under your last post that agrees with the guy who said he was stupid you’ll see what I ran into. Anyhow nice talking to you earlier. I think rather than a lot is stupid guys I would use the term non tech savvy maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Art

Ok I pressed down and a pop up appeared with a bunch of little squares on it. Nothing to do there???? If I scroll to the bottom of the page you said I was looking for what a check mark. Nothing there. If I press on the song I get the little boxes with the lines in them.

The lumen app it's something that can be useful but it does require lots of effort to learn it.  The problem is if you stay away from it for a few weeks or so and don't use it very much you have to learn it again.

It is an extremely difficult app to master.  It is horrible horrible horrible.

It's very sad because the underlying engine is seemingly very good.  And it's pretty to look at.

But ease of use is negative infinity.

tah, these icons should be near the bottom of your screen. They’re only visible when you highlight (touch) a song in the right-hand panel, then you’ll see these options appear. Touch the song and lift your finger for this. If you touch it longer, you'll see other options. One that isn’t shown here is like the very bottom one, but with a ’check mark’ instead of an ’X’. It selects all songs, which is ideal for moving an entire album to the left-hand panel to play it. Have you looked at Lumin’s Online Manual? It’s not great, but you’ll be able to figure out a lot if you actually go through it while you’re using the streamer.

  • Play Now Play now: Adds selection to the bottom of the Playlist and LUMIN will skip to it and play immediately
  • Play Next Play next: Adds selection after the ’Now Playing’ song and LUMIN will play it after the current song has finished
  • Play Later Play later: Adds selection to the bottom of the Playlist
  • Play and replace Play and replace: Replaces the whole of the Playlist with the selection, and starts playing
  • Clear selection Clear selection: Deselects all songs.

Does anyone know a way to make the app delete a song off the queue after it plays it?
On the Aurender app, they call this “consume mode”.

Hi tah800
I posted this reply in the other LUMIN thread, but I've just seen this one and thought I'd copy it across.

Sorry to hear that you are finding the app difficult.
There are sections in the online manual to cover most things here: https://luminmusic.com/manual

A good starting point for what you describe above is here:
https://luminmusic.com/manual/app-introduction.html

The main thing to know is that LUMIN will only play tracks from its own playlist.
This is the list shown on the left on tablet, or in the middle screen on phone.
If something is playing on LUMIN, then it has been added to this playlist.

The icons at the bottom of it let you save, load and delete these LUMIN Playlists.

To get things into the playlist, you need to use the browse window first. Selecting them will move them into the Playlist. Depending on your settings, there are different ways that tracks move across. Some people requested that adding a track also adds the whole album, so there are options for that, as well as selecting multiple tracks. This is explained in more detail halfway down this page:
https://luminmusic.com/manual/app-browsing.html

If you use TIDAL playlists as your primary music organisation method, then you might prefer using TIDAL Connect (if you have a more recent LUMIN Model). It really depends if you also use locally stored music, or other streaming services and want to mix playlists.

If not using TIDAL Connect, read on.

You can add a whole TIDAL playlist to your LUMIN Playlist from within the app by browsing TIDAL > My Music > Playlists.
Then you can press and hold on the whole playlist to add it to the LUMIN Playlist.
Depending on which button you press (those icons that builder3 has posted above) it will add to the end/current position or replace the whole playlist.
The button icons are described on that link above too.

What isn't possible is that when you add tracks to a playlist in TIDAL, it will automatically add them to the LUMIN one - you'd have to navigate to and press and hold the playlist again.

For details on how to save/load playlists see here:
https://luminmusic.com/manual/app-playlist.html

The only thing I wasn't sure on was why a playlist might have disappeared. But perhaps it was just confusion between seeing the browse window and seeing the playlist window. As mentioned in the manual, getting an overview of the app is best done on tablet if possible.

I hope that's helped a bit, but hopefully a good read of the manual will help further.
Our support team don't monitor Audiogon, so if you need more direct help please use the support email address on our website.

App needs to be more intuitive. Descriptive words need to be added somewhere on the app screen.

It's not a teaching moment every time I use it.

Maybe if they offered courses at a community college.

It's really sad, such a great Engine with a nice appearance and so difficult to drive.

Often, I'll use the Tidal app on my desktop machine. There are ways to save albums, etc, that will then show up in the Lumin app on my IPad. It's not too hard. I can see more stuff on the Tidal app, as opposed to looking at Tidal thru the Lumin app.

+1 @builder3

If you’re using Tidal, use the Tidal app on your machine of choice with Tidal connect and you never need to use the Lumin app (except for configuration).

It’s not that the Lumin app is that bad (it’s not really that hard to use), but it is fairly limited relative to what the Tidal app can do.

I wish Quboz would hurry up and release their rumored (vapor-ware?) Quboz connect so I could switch.

Aurender, if you're listening, you really should support Tidal connect.

I'm actually not using Tidal connect. There was a brief period where it worked, but I haven't been able to stream directly from Tidal for quite a while. Emailed Lumin tech support, the issue is unresolved. I've come to the conclusion that the problem lies with my router, it's too convoluted to go into. I'll be going with a new ISP soon. So essentially, I'm still going with a bastardized process, find stuff I like on Tidal's app, save it to my music or favorites, and it appears on the Lumin app, where I then send it to the T2.
