Lack of Female Representation

So who can explain the near lack of females in our hobby?  There are far more women discussing football than audio, by a long shot.  There are a lot more women into fixing up their cars as well.  I just can’t think of a hobby, other than ours, where representation is so close to zero.

@audition__audio OK then. I will try.

One of the many ways that the Audiogon community can welcome females into the audio discussions would be to leave the off color, distateful commentary out every discussion. Ladies and gentlemen discussing audio topics like ladies and gentlemen would be a nice aspiration.
Virtue signaling? rilly? I thought it was a simple question why more women weren’t into high end audio.
So many of the system photos on this website show a cluttered room where a concerted effort to create a shrine to complexity is anchored by a single chair. Too many in our hobby are more interested in equipment rather than music. Few women hang out in rebuilding your carb forums but they still enjoy driving a car. In general I would venture as a group they find balance a little better than the average audiogoner.
@ncbassplayer

That should win you the award for dumbest first post ever although I suspect it isnt your first post. Just your first under this username. How very unfortunate that you feel this way.
@audition__audio I actually didn't intend to be patronizing to the two brave souls who posted and I doubt seriously they felt patronized. I intended to be kind and welcoming.

If I somehow offended you by doing so, it wasn't my intent.
Terrific feedback and thrilled to have two wonderful women in the fold. The average IQ here spiked and Audiogon is a better place due to your presence. Continued happy listening and please do start a thread on a topic that interests you. Be well.
@audition__audio No worries. I know where you are coming from. I miss the days where people could disagree agreeably! Sounds simple but it isn't. Lot's of things sting and offend these days when they probably shouldn't.

Some might think taxes should be raised to feed the homeless or fight a war, others might think they already pay enough taxes and we should all agree there is middle ground to have a conversation.
Who’s to say the cause and effect regarding a problem no one really wants to or cares to fix. Anyone who has been to any of the many audio shows pre-covid need not wonder why there aren’t more females interested in the “hobby”.
A few day work strippers holding cables, a few silly cars usually in a color few should hope to emulate. Attending a show answers alot of questions though, for insatance “who buys these shoes with velcro straps”, “where have all the dad-jeans gone” and “Who is this dude referring to in the song Keith dont go and why”. Seriously though, women enjoy music equally as much as men but they just dont need all the ocd bs and locker room commentary. Nor do many gentlemen for that matter.
@russ69 My wife says the same thing but car dealers don't take advantage unless its easy. They size people up which is why in my business we secret shop and punt someone predisposed to treating others that way.

@dronepunk My wife was an executive at a money center bank (one of the predecessors to JPMorgan Chase). Unequal pay for equal work continues at every level of society. What we are witnessing though with the way commerce has changed over the past 10-15 years combined with the warp speed change forced by the pandemic is the barriers to change are getting blown to pieces. Witness Bumble vs Match. I use neither because I am happily married but Bumble is the answer to the question of when are things going to change?

@ozzy "Just a story"? It was still unequal 10 years ago for objectively equal work/experience. The gap has closed and in many organizations affirmative steps were taken. I hope the trend continues. In exceptional organizations, it is almost a distant memory. Almost. It wasn't that long ago that the rationalization was "the man has a family to support" which was BS then and now.
@just_krissy I’m ashamed at some of the commentary I see posted but the good riddance comment may take the prize. Ive often wondered if removing the cloak of anonymity would help those inclined to be rude or cruel to be less so. It seems the pushy bullies try to impose their beliefs on the community and sometimes they succeed. Hang in there, we need more diverse opinions and certainly the bullies will hate that.
@au_lait

+1 and you could have ended your post with a "mic drop"! Thank you for posting.
@nonoise LOL…your post was terrific.

@audition__audio Did you have a tough day? All that needs to happen for others to feel welcome is to welcome them. All that needs to happen for those that are trying to learn is to help them if you are in a position to do so. I’m sure you do those things here and during your normal day.

I’m going to guess you wouldn’t be opposed to revising certain parts of history or women’s studies right? John Glenn relied, insisted as a matter of fact, on the mathematical skills of a woman of color for trajectory analysis. That didn’t make it in to the first version of history but mercifully it has found its way in to history 2.0. We all share a responsibility to assist others when a formerly exclusionary pursuit no longer excludes.

@nonoise Now why did you have to bring up therapy? For some of those on Audiogon, they tried therapy in the attempt to reconcile the issues with their first four marriages, so, apparently therapy just doesn't work! ;-)

@audition__audio I was just sparring with you a wee bit regarding your comment “embrace our actual history”.

If by referring to me as a primitive you imply a desire to go back to the days of open discourse, lack of cancel-culture, teachers that dont socially indoctrinate, open college forums, willingness to embrace our actual history, rejection of societal androgenization, recognition/reward, etc then I am definitely a primitive and I wear this badge proudly.

@yuviaora Your post is just a bit over the top isn’t it? As the son of a Marine and the Godson of a Medal of Honor recipient Marine, right and wrong was hammered into me from my earliest recollection. When I say hammered, you have no idea. I had two sisters and if you pay attention, virtually every young woman has found herself in a pretty dangerous situation. There were occasions where I had to have “conversations” with young men who decided they were entitled to say or act however they wanted. They were not and they understood that clearly following those conversations. Your mention of rape is no joke, not even a little and is out of line. The very fact you typed that and chose to post it speaks volumes about your lack of or incapability of empathy for others or worse. You can fix it though if you try, which I hope you do.
@audition__audio You are better than this but there must be something else thats troubling you than female representation in high end audio.

So djones what you got? Give us a solution. How about some new pejoratives. Mansplain is so 1990s. Lets spar if you got the kiwis for it.
Lets ask ourselves why so many get upset when a topic regarding inclusion or fairness is presented.
Whatever you say Yuvi. I would contend however that your sample size is likely statistically inaccurate. My wife and I volunteer with sexual assualt vistims as eell as the homeless and early childhood development. Im not sure which red flag you are referring to but your insinuations are unkind, unwelcome and unfair.
