Just another question about power surge.

I am using the old Panamax 6 & 8 power strips. I am thinking about using the on/off control on my Panamax to turn off my power amp and other components. Out of my own paranoid, Would this shortened the life span of my amp in a long run or is it just another myth? Amp is the Bryston 4 BSST and I gate the damn soft push-in on/off upfront. Sometimes it works at on touch, sometimes I have to push couple times with more pressure against the "soft membrance on/off". Would you prefer Panamax, Monster or others. No Vodoo or snake oil please. Just a good surge protection not line condition needed at this time.
