Jeff Rowland Capri- looking for love.


Can u name some of the used amps (class A or B) from 100- 200w in $1k range that do (or DON'T) mate well with JR Capri preamp?

Finally, Christmas is around the corner, so I'm thinking of bringing out the closet my JR Capri preamp and JR's 102-amp to play around with couple diff small bookshelf sets that I placed in a small 12' x14' listening room. But, the Jeff 102-amp is a 100w class-D type, I kinda wanna go back to class A/B- perhaps, ones with big transformers and weighted like a tank...

I used a Capri with a set of VAC Auricle Musicblocs. No issues for me and as previously mentioned the impedance matching is not going to present much if any issues for amplifiers. The Capri is a lot of preamp for the money.
Nasaman, Capri has very low output impedance: 40 Ohms balanced, 80 Ohms unbalanced.... I am going to be very surprised if you ever find an amplifier that is NOT compatible with Capri. Fact is that most any amp, tube, SS, or class D should have no problem at all being driven by Capri. Guido
Has any1 mated Capri with Nad 375Bee amp?
With all the technical relations that Kijanki has listed for the Capri, can it be mated with tubes amps like Cary? Anyone?

My Capri mates well with Threshold SA/6e monoblocks, Pass Labs, Aleph 2 monoblocks, and even the Pass Labs X5 when used in a pinch for 2-channel.
Nasaman, Jeff Rowland uses switching power supplies (including Capri) for low noise. He also uses switching power supply in his latest designs Model 625 and 725 that are class AB amps. He explains technical reasons here:

Transformer doesn't have to be large to carry a lot of power - it all depends on frequency. His power supplies operate at 1MHz (easy to filter out), zero voltage/zero current switching, have power factor correction that presents resistive load, and are line/load regulated. In comparison linear power supply is in reality a primitive switcher that operates at 120Hz and produces high current spikes (since it is switching at max voltage). It is also unregulated in power amps (providing power to output devices) because of poor efficiency.

You can easily find really bad switchers (often in computers) but you can also find really bad linear supplies. Don't discard new technology just because is called "Switching Power Supply". Linear in spite of its name is also a switcher.

It suggests that Capri is better than 102. I use model 102 in combination with power factor correcting conditioner. Second generation class D amps from Rowland or Bel Canto have power factor correction built in.
