What you are describing is HT Bypass. The only difference is that a true HT Bypass function has fixed gain in the preamp so that multichannel balances are controlled by the processor.

How do I run HT through a tape loop or aux in?
Hello:
I'm looking to upgrade my preamp. Mostly music so thinking about a stereo preamp. Can I then run a processor in the tape monitor? Or can I run a processor into Aux for L/R and use processor outs to a 3-channel for rear/center?
Are there units designed for this?
Is this poor approach? SHould I just live with a Pre/Pro that has HT bypass?
