How do I measure a component's frequency response?

As a diagnostic, I want to determine if a component is producing a basically flat frequency response or if there are aberrations. Can I do this--and how--ideally with the tools I have at hand: a multimeter and a 1/3 octave test tone CD? (The component I want to measure is a CD player.)

Basically, no. To do so and get meaningful results requires more sophisticated test equipment than that. the AP system (audio precision) or some combination of audio frequency signal generators and a scope (among other things).
