You mean like mobile audio jamborees, or whatever they're called? Sigh...I have enough to do managing work, kids, getting to as many LIVE music events as I can...and now KAYAKING (whoopie!), to worry about whether my finely-honed systems pass anybody else's muster! Maybe some of the younguns will respond, but for me a great system is about the enjoyment of MUSIC, not bragging rights.

Uh, slot cars and shooting (target) ARE competitive events. That's the point! I think most people build audio systems to actually listen to music. This is mostly a solitary event, or sometimes shared with a close significant other. I'll even go as far as some folks get together with other interested hobbiest to enjoy listening together. However, I don't think listening to music is a competitive event.
In general, I don't think most of the people that frequent this board have much in common with the people that do car stereo competitions. That event is about LOUD and breaking things is common and a sign of success (windshields). Here, breaking something is generally a bad thing!
If you get into home audio in an effort to try to one-up your buddy, you are going to spend a lot of money! Oh, and you will likely miss the whole point of the exercise!

some people think this is competition. look at some of the threads that people put out on audiogon. there have been many times from a couple people that state 'i had somebody listen to my system and they indicated it was the most musical system this side of %^%$^^', or some reviewer rated my piece of equipment the best, or I have the best speaker, amp, etc.. in the world. to me, these people don't know what they are talking about and all they are out here to do is try to impress other people with what they might have or actually, it is more like what they don't have. |

Lets just make it a big party/picnic with other sporting games like bobbing for 300B tubes, and pin the tail on the driver! There could be CD Ultimate Frisbee, and lets not forget the popular DAC Pinata! For all you old track stars from back in high school there'll be the Krell toss, and the subwoofer hurdles. Don't forget to bring something to throw on the Class-A BBQ! See'ya'll there! There'll be plenty of prizes for everyone so you can all go home feeling proud!

I don't think your idea is very relevant, or practical for that matter. It would be nice, however, if Audiogon created an optional searchable field for geographical location. This way if someone was visiting a given locale, it would be easier to hook up with like minded souls. |

That way if I'm in the Phuket part of Thailand, I can look up my old audiophile buddy Lex Prapunta Puanglarplai and have a listen to his nORHs.
Then, we can go bobbing for Siamese hermaphrodites later in the evening. |

OK...in all seriousness, I was checking out the photo gallery on Audioreview.com for the first time in a long time. It appears that people who view the photos can rate the system on a 1-10 scale using their own personal criteria. I for ne thought it was pretty interesting...maybe we could have something like that on the Gon. Sure...we wouldn't actually get to hear the system, but based on members personal experiences with various gear, knowledge of room accoustics and just putting forth their 2c with regards to their own personal style (i.e. decorating/setup/etc) we could have something that would be interesting...maybe not quite like the stereo "shootout" that you are describing, but it could be fun none the less..and remember...

get to show off their systems. It`s called:
AUDIO/VIDEO INTERIORS! Go buy that magazine.
In there you`ll find people who spend alot of money
on their rig, and have equipment that`s already
outdated by 2-3 years. Second,
I don`t have $30,000 to spend on my system just so
somebody can out do me the next month and spend
$40,000 and win. IF you want to give me your money,
then i`ll be more than happy to enter.

There are too many subjectivities for a contest -- oh wait, maybe it could be like ice skating competitions. That's subjective and a winner is always chosen, even if they're not the best. Nah! Too dicey. We'd start having audiophile boyfriends or girlfriends out there breaking kneecaps ;-)
I do like the idea of getting out and listening to some of the high end systems -- but I'd rather approach it from a learning perspective rather than being strictly competitive. |
