So I’m trying to understand why so many people think klipsch or horn speakers are bright

I have two  set up garage and living room both with horn speakers EPIC CF4 garage and and KLF 30 mahogany living room

I have recorded this songs with my iPhone  listen to them and feel free to tell me what you don’t like about them

lordrootman,

Is there a particular reason why you are using both pairs at the same time? I would think that timing as well as imaging would be better with just one pair or the other.

I can say for sure that over my computer speakers, the opening guitar introduction sounds better to me on the original drivers. A little more dynamic and the timbre sounds more real.

I listened to both versions twice, but of course it's hard to tell on computer speakers, almost a joke. I did perceive a difference though. The original presented the vocal as slightly softer and more diffuse while the new driver seemed a bit more sharply focused.

I'm curious as to why you chose that driver as I see that many that modify the Epics use an older Electro Voice compression driver. Had you considered that also?

Two questions:

In what ways does it sound better?

Does it require crossover changes?

lordrootman,

Nice comparison. It's impossible to make reliable judgements over computer speakers, but that said, yours sounds very clear and immediate. I would never guess that there was such a crazy price differential in these systems. I think that the Epics are amazing speakers, and that's why I've kept them longer than any other.

Thanks

That is very interesting lordrootman. I have read on other Epic mod threads about changing to the Electro Voice compression driver, and although I knew that it needed additional bracing, I never heard anyone say that they altered the crossover, even Moray James, the king of Epic mods.

How do you know lordrootman that the change of drivers didn't require changes in the crossover, and if so, were you equipped to make those crossover changes?

Hard to comment judging with computer speakers of course, but no, it doesn't sound bright, but full disclosure, I use Epic CF 4 speakers as well, and no, they're not bright. I think the demo music wasn't ideal as it was very wispery.
By the way, that's the best garage system I ever saw!
I think $2000.00 is fair for V1s in great condition like that. Mine are version 1 and they are getting very hard to find. I thought that yours might be version 2 lordrootamn because the dust caps on the woofers looked shinier than mine.

Herman,

Isn't the sound affected by the large objects sitting in the bass horns?

I think that part of the magic of the Epic CF4 is the D'Appolito configuration of the drivers.

That is very true atmasphere. I have less trouble with reflections since using horns.

Oh no! You're back again, with your encyclopedia of crazy opinions and psuedo facts. It was a nice vacation while it lasted.
