Higher End DACs

I am looking for a DAC (potentially streamer&DAC) to be paired in a mcintosh system (c1100/611). Its my first foray into digital streaming and I have no need for a CD player.

I see a lot of love for Esoteric, however, most seems to be around their transports? Are they not as renowned for pure digital streaming and/or standalone DACs? I see DCS (for instance) often referenced for standalone DACs - how does Esoteric compare?

Contact Crescendo Fine Audio for DCS Products, located in Wheatridge,
CO.
Some customers doing business are located out of State so do check into
what accommodations may be possible.
Also DCS does offer a Network Bridge as described at darko.audio.

Much to take in on this thread ... Chord would be worth Listening to for one.
TT2 with MScaler or even DAVE and w/wo MScaler (FPGA Type).

The Audiophile Style Review referenced by m1k3 is through, and addresses relative components up and downstream with a Summary and do take some time to read the ’Comparison to other DACs’ if you have not done so.
The Windows 10 based "Renderer" has a definite appeal to me as I do use a PC / USB to Stream Amazon HD. And brings to mind HQ Player.

Also, did you check out the DCS Network Bridge Article?
Thoughts ... ?

At a relative high level there is less color and more transparency and
Detail being an increasing distinction.
Generally ...
At some level SS (different classes) and Tube Gear (Pre / Amplifier Phono-Pre / DAC / Streamer) become comparatively good.
Until recently manufacturers have / have not offered complete systems.
( 'High End System' being the noted distinction )
PS Audio would be an example. Now developing AN3 Loudspeaker.
End to End Systems.
Some manufacturers Still Specialize. Like DCS.
Listening to different components (variables) while leaving the rest of the
System (constant) is the best way to discern any differences.
This should be an objective Goal.

@ufguy73, A common question ... different directions are a quirk in development.
Streaming / Pre / DAC is common ... Look at the description for Pre Box
S2 digital.
Also for another version: https://www.project-audio.com/en/product/stream-box-s2/ ... for consideration.
Another example would be Hugo TT2 includes a Headphone Amp otherwise pure DAC.

In the example of T+A choose the Streaming DAC and use your existing Pre ... or T+A SDV-3100 Pre Streaming DAC for streaming ... you have to decide which sounds best to you.
@erik_squires, Currently no DAC being used.

"Its my first foray into digital streaming and I have no need for a CD player." OP
@jetter, upstream component selection would likely not play a role to the
same extent. That is Data packets are streamed and memory buffer before procesing. Bytes is Bytes ...
