Well stated. Happy Listening!
The BAD ones are ones about Bruce Springsteen. If I were you I would not DARE trying to be on.
I had one where I was on and they put me on moderator preview when I posted NOTHING offensive then a few weeks later I was shut down. Four months later I opened a new account on that site that only lasts FOUR days. I get a warning then permanent ban for something I was accused of that I did NOT do.
Another I was on and for QUITE a while a bunch of morons were sending me messages trying to get rid of me. There was NOTHING wrong with me. Four months in I'm put on suspension. Despite all those times I get the threat and I tell them don't ban me cause I did nothing. My suspension ends. I'm back on. Last four days. I'm done - NO Right to do that. I set up a new account which is STILL on moderator preview. Everytime I contact them to end my moderator preview they ignore it They just don't give a f**k.
Who can I report them to?
I got banned for posting an article that exposed audio note UK as stealing the product IP and designs from audio note japan. i simply asked if any of this was true, and they wound up banning me from posting in the thread without so much as a warning or reason. i then contacted an admin and he banned me for a week for no reason, and then i kept contacting the admins requesting to be unbanned because it wasnt fair that i did nothing wrong and they permabanned me. the admins are nazis and morons.
Oh, and don't dare visit any Queen threads. You'll be eaten alive by some very angry people, no matter what you say. Just a heads up.
That much is actually true, lol. Their Queen fans are fanatic to the point of psychotic. But otherwise it's not such a bad place imho. A lot of intricate knowledge there, among all the pontificating. I've never been banned anywhere in 25 years online. Maybe I just don't sail close enough to the wind.
I’d say there's bad info and a few over-sensitive people on this thread who throw a fit if they can’t do whatever they please. Play nice, understand the environment, and there shouldn’t be a problem. It’s not a democracy, it’s a privately run forum. I’ve been a member for years, go there to research recordings and occasionally chime in. Member in good standing. Lesson learned.
I was "Banned" with No specific reason given.I am not missing anything as it is similar to Kindergarten. The Long-Time Members initiate "Pig-Piles" on the Brand New Members. If You butt Heads with a Veteran Member, They will notify the Staff and manipulate issues to get You Banned. There is a Couple of Real Losers on there and they then have Their own "Clueless Ubderlings". It is cheap entertainment on a Saturday Night as none of Them are out on "Date Night". HaHaHa
My initial account has now been terminated too. I DID NOT VIOLATE ANY RULES. FORUMS ARE SUCH A**Holes To me.
BTX (Springsteen) - Was on for 4 months, 10 days. Suspended (NO RIGHT FOR THEM TO DO THAT) for 4 weeks (12/29-1/26). Back on 1/26. People are A**Holes again. 1/30 I get all kinds of bullcrap people are saying. All kinds of talk of completely terminating me - I keep messaging "don't ban me". Flynn the moderator doesn't care. That son of a B***h does it anyway. I DID NOTHING WRONG - They are just having me terminated to make me blow a gasket.
I Set up a New account with a new email address I specifically use because of losing forum accounts with my old one.
I was clear to join BUT STILL NOT off of the new member - moderator preview.
GreasyLake (Springsteen) - Join. I post. I am accused and put on moderator preview - I try to talk them out of putting me on moderator preview because I did NOTHING offensive BUT they do it anyway. A couple weeks later I am terminated. Last Month: My account is clear to join. I join. I post. I receive a LIIIIIITLE Bit of Bullying. 4 days in I get a warning (Though I did NOTHING) that because of a comment I made I'm immediately banned (NOT SUSPENDED - TERMINATED). I Want to Try EVERYTHING to be able to return. I made NO comments that were inappropriate - They have ZERO right to shut me down. I just Facebook messaged them I want them to write me back and say YES to reopen my account.
IORR - Rolling Stones. I Join after some log in issues. I post. About two weeks in - I try to log in only to find my account was closed WITHOUT NOTICE. I contact the boss saying I want to go in - He REFUSES because I was reported (Actually for nothing). I've reached him FIVE times yes FIVE times because I am so pissed at him for immediately terminating (NOT Suspending) me WITHOUT NOTICE. I'd Rather I was suspended. I'll try him again.
Does anyone have an email address to reprimand him for letting me go?
I open one account. Days Later. I am unable to post. Time later. I am able to post again. Days after that. Posting shut down.
Last Night: I set up new account due to losing abillity to post with other one. Post my introduction post. Post some other content.
Tonight: I go in ready to post. I've been banned for Spamming (DID NOT SPAM). I try to contact/send a message to a moderator/read posts - CAN'T. THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO THAT CAUSE I DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG.
I did not do ANYTHING that told him to dismiss me.
I've been a member there for about a year. At first it was fun, and kind of addictive. I've met some nice people on there, but the vibe is very strange. There are people on there that will attack you for nothing, and others will pile on. If you politely try to defend yourself, either Steve or the Gorts will swoop in, and it feels like they are on the attackers side. Steve seems to have a snobby attitude, and he'll give the business to anyone he darn well pleases, but don't you dare do the same. I've been attacked several times for being positive, and trying to take the high road on issues. I'm not a hater, so I feel like an outsider on there. I don't post there anymore, because the whole, my favorite band is better than your favorite band stuff is really childish and boring.
not to worry about the SH site, it is a joke, in very poor taste. Your customers will follow you to other sites. eBay, by and large, captures the global audience including me. There are high-end sellers still on that site. Equally, there are high-end collectors searching daily as well.
Based on your locale, you may consider an auction house for five-figure Records. As above, Record Shows/Swap meets are excellent as well.
The Austin Record Show enters my mind. Keep us posted on your situation. SH has made many enemies by operating his communist site.
Too bad, as it is a pretty good read for variations in recordings, pressings, production of music.
@jakobian64-I don't question what you wrote, but that seems crazy, i've purchased a few WLPs there, and unless there was some misunderstanding on the part of the Gort, I can't see why that would be a problem. (Their only issue is bootlegs, but that's not what you were selling).
In terms of alternatives, not many. Discogs and Ebay are the typical places. I had conversations with several large dealers about an alternative site for play graded high end records and almost universally, the dealers believed that the reach of e-Bay and Discogs outweighed any merits to a 'vetted' sellers forum. As you probably know, grading is all over the place, even play grading. Obviously, you'll get hammered by wholesaling them, so I'd be interested to see what alternatives others suggest. I do buy from private dealer websites, but they don't have nearly as much visibility. A show might be a good bet if you are up for it. Although the Austin show is considered one of the biggest, I think the WFMU show in NY is the best show I've been to in the States in terms of quality and buyers of high ticket records. That's probably a logistical nightmare for you. Do they have pop up record shows near you? I know there are a few that my friend in Philly goes to-- much high quality, obscure, and desirable stuff.
Where to begin. I used to sell Beatles UK first or second pressings on Hoffman Forum, did this for about three years . As I have been in the music business for almost sixty years, I had quite a collection, and everyone I sold I got great feedback A+ all the way. One day I thought I would sell a few CBS / Asylum etc. demo albums, and singles . James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell come to mind. These were unplayed radio station copies . I NEVER went with the hype that you are going to pay more for a promo. So I get this letter from a Gorg, I’m trying to remember his name Cairo something ? He writes me and said if he ever saw another demo I would be banished for good, he was just shooting a warning shot over the bow. Well, the listing was already up. I looked to see if anyone else had promos or “ demonstration “ vinyl they were selling on Hoffman Forum, there were several people selling less than stellar promo copies of records . I wrote back and asked why I was singled out. At that instant he banned me, that was five years ago. I was selling around $800. a month in UK Beatles in fantastic condition. This “ Cairo “ I tried to reason with, he in effect told me to go piss up a rope, mind you, as the forum never took a cut, I donated to the Hoffman Forum when I was selling . I would love to meet this pitiful little excuse for a human being . I’m seventy two now, my records are my livelihood. E Bay and Discogs are a joke,Discogs make Ebay look like an audiophile site .
If anyone know a sellers forum for high end, and I do mean high end vinyl records ( I know,it’s not really vinyl ) let me know please . Thanks for letting me vent . Diatribe complete on that issue .
I am not a fan of SH mastering so I stay away from the SH Music forum which is where posters seem to get banned most often. I do like to follow the SH Equipment forum though. There are a pretty diverse group of posters. Also there are some Audio Note fans who post frequently on AN related topics making the SH forum the best place I know of to find opinions on AN gear.
I 1st heard about the SH forum HERE. So I figured I'd give it a look-see. I like it. Now I post over there a lot more than I do here! While the moderators's presence can definitely be felt from time to time, it's nowhere near as pervasive as it's been made out to be here. Fact is, I've been 'moderated'; more HERE than there (although it's been some time since I've been messed with on either site).
I have no idea what professor you're talking about that said Americans are anti intellectual, but the context in which you are using the term implies that it's just another way of saying someone doesn't agree with you. If someone doesn't agree with you then they must be wrong. You did go to some college in NJ, and everyone knows that's where all the smart people come from.
I like the Hoffman forum for several reasons: there are some deep
threads (mostly older) that detail much info on deadwax and various
pressings. It is as good a resource as any to start if you are
researching older 'pop' or 'rock' records.
I also like the fact that the forum is moderated. Very little personal
sniping. I've talked to Steve several times and he's been pleasant.
For what it is worth, it is a music site, not a gear site, and there is a
vast amount of stuff there you have to wade through, but there are
some very good people there once you get to know the place. I'm not
trying to persuade you otherwise if you had a bad experience, or don't
find the site's content to your liking, but I find it a worthwhile place.
BTW, a 'gort' is a robot from 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' a classic
old sci-fi movie. (Hoffman also has a pretty good board on older film,
music for film, etc.)
PS: many of the worthwhile threads have nothing to do with the
records Steve mastered.
I hardly ever agree with Zd542 but he is most certainly
correct about AL not missing much.
The professors point was that Americans are anti-intellectual which is generally true. I remember eating at a table at the Free University of Berlin, when a fellow American said to a German student jokingly. "if you're so smart why aren't you rich?" The half dozen German students had zero idea what he meant and they all spoke English well.
The Harvard prof also dragged me over to a window, parted the blind and said in Russia I could look out see the KGB agent watching my apartment, Americans have a better system, they carry their own KBG agent around in their heads.
AL doesn't miss anything.
As much as we may not like it, moderators are allowed to moderate their threads. It's not a free speech issue. That web site is someones property, and the owner can do as he wishes with is as long as he doesn'the break any laws. And its not against the law to moderate a thread.
Precisely Schubert! Almarg is missing the entire conversation. SH operates his business (website) on American soil, therefore, he must be held responsible for not upholding free speech/free press amendment. Like I stated previously, communism at its ugly finest.
This discussion comes at a great time as we real Americans prepare to celebrate Memorial Day. Tell it to the many Veterans whom died protecting our Liberty.
If you think Hoffman's forums are bad in this regard, go have a look at Hydrogen Audio. The people that run that website are insane when it comes to what you can or can't post.
I was reading some posts on computeraudiophile.com and one of the posters started talking about an experiance they had on Hydrogen. He was new to the site and responded to a pole someone was taking. It was asking what your favorite music player is. He put down jriver and they almost kicked him off the site because of it. The moderators didn't like the fact that you have to buy jriver. They said it was insulting the other members. They gave him a warning that if something like this happens again, they're closing his account. All he did was take part in a pole. I would have never believed that story but he did provide the post and email he got from the moderators. I was still curious so I went over to hydrogen myself and found the post. He was telling the truth.
That's right, Schubert. You and I are free to shoot our mouths off because no one pays any attention to us anyway. Just a couple of senile old nutcases.
John Lennon, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King weren't so easily overlooked as I am though. What they had to say was heard briefly. Think about what those guys have in common now. All had their free speech terminated prematurely.
