Ground wire placement in DIY power cords

I have been experimenting with DIY power cords. My early attempts were based on the VH Audio "flavors" and I have been making significant modifications to those, as well as contemplating some different configurations. One observation I find interesting, is how some such as VH Audio, and I believe Bob Crump, strongly recommend(ed) counter-sprialing the ground wire and spacing it away from the load/neutral wires, while many others such as Neotech, Oyaide, and Purist Audio (makers of the world class Dominus PC), among others, simply parallel the ground wires adjacent to the load/neutral wires. Is the effect of the ground wire placement not that big a deal? I am not expecting a definitive answer, but I would be interested to hear any ideas or opinions on this descripancy, simply for discussion purposes.
