Academy records, 12 W 18th St (between 5th and 6th). Subway stop is Union Square. 212 242-3000. You are in for a real treat.
Follow up to my earlier post. Academy has two sides to their business. The internet portion carries rarer, more expensive recordings, often of historical significance for a serious collector, which I am not. You can access the entire catalogue online, order what you want and have it waiting for you at the register when you arrive. The internet records are completely separate from the records (and cd's) on the first floor of the store itself, where the real bargains are. Today, for example, in the unsorted new arrivals section, I found a sealed, never opened recording of Sviatoslav Richter's performance of "Pictures at an Exhibition" recorded live in Sofia in 1957. It cost $5. Even if the 1983 pressing for an Italian label is terrible, it will have cost me less than venti latte. The staff are smart, courteous and helpful. Bring a U-Haul.
