Another vote for the Devore Fidelity 8's. They're incredible in my smallish living room. Note that the 8's are front ported but the Super 8's are rear ported. Though they're a floorstander, they have a small footprint and take up less room than the stand-mounts I've had before them. |
You've got to consider Merlin TSM. Search the archives, tons written about them here and on audioreview.com

The Merlin's are very nice speakers! If you want another option that tends to fly under the radar, take a look at a used pair of Talon Hawks. They are a smallish two way and can get pushed back toward the wall for bass reinforcement if needed or to keep them out of the room.
They are a very good sounding speaker and easy to drive. They do require stands though...

I owned the TSM's before the Devore 8's and I'll stand by my recommendation of the Devores, especially in a small to medium space. |

I had the same problem with $2-3K speakers in my office near to the front wall and settled on the AZ Adagios - great speakers! But the other contendes were Kitty Kat Revelators (www. Northacoustics) which have rave reviews next to the wall, Totem Arros, Usher Be-718. I had Merlin TSM-MXe's, very good speakers but imaging was a problem so close to the wall. They needed to be a good few feet out to image/soundstage as well as the Adagios do close to the wall. |
My bedroom is 18'X19' and has typical bedroom furniture. My audio gears consist of slim Devices Transporter and Counterpoint NP100. It is a hybrid amp with 6SN7 tubes and bipolar outputs.
I mainly listen to this setup before going to bed and weekend mornings. I'll be happy to get cheaper speakers if they are good.

Given what you have said, I would suggest the NHT Classic 2 or 3. They are acoustic suspension/sealed box speakers. Besides sounding good, they look good and can be placed on shelves, near rear walls, etc. They sound very musical and almost 3D like with tubes.

Thanks all. I am not a fan for monitor speakers. They tend to be shy on bass and need stands to hold them up. Then they tend to be top heavy and get knocked off easily.
I also have a pair of Usher V-602s. They work well with my 300B SET amp in my home office. But they are too bright when driven by the Counterpoint NP100 in my bedroom. I think Usher speakers work well with amps with slightly recessed highs. |
I heard the Guru QM10 speakers at RMAF which are around $2,000 and was blown away at how good they sound. The bass was surprisingly good given their small size and they are designed to be placed near a wall. |
Has anyone tried Dali Ikon 6 close to the rear wall? Will it be a good choice?
