Few Problems with Computer as Source

Currently I use iTune on my HP laptop. (going back to Macs next time they update their notebook line w/ Montevina processor)... But that's another topic onto it self... All my music file are stored on an external hardrive connected via USB. I use TosLink out to my C.E.C DAC.

It had always made strange noises. Sometimes it sound like as if it is jumbled up. Sometimes it sound like birds chirping... What is the cause of that? Is that Jitter? Is it because of USB? Is it because of TosLink? Or is it because my HP is a PoS? I thought it was my DAC, but aparently it is not...

This happens no matter if the file is in WAV or Lossless...

When using other transports to play CD's (or my built-in CD drive) the annoying chirping sound does not occur. Music does play tho, just got a weird chirp... And it seem to happen randomly, it does not seem to be in a repeating pattern (or a pattern i can identify)...

I'm starting the source of the problem is because the files are on external drive (clock/sync/jitter issue)... maybe if i upgrade the external drive to something w/ more than 2MB of cache the problem would be gone?... or one w/ FireWire? Maybe try another USB cable.

Does anyone out there have the same problem?

Maybe I should give PS Audio Memory Transport a try once it's out...
Sounds like "lack of sync lock" between the source (toslink output) and the DAC. I've heard what sounds like a similar sound between a regular CD transport and DAC too. Do you have the ability to try a different "transport" like a CD player or DVD player connected to the DAC via toslink? If so and you don't experience the issue, you may have a configuration issue with the sound card or it may be defective.

When you hear the sound do you also hear music, or is it just the noise?
