Eminent Technology ET-2 Tonearm Owners

Where are you? What mods have you done ?

I have been using these ET2's for over 9 years now.
I am still figuring them out and learning from them. They can be modified in so many ways. Bruce Thigpen laid down the GENIUS behind this tonearm over 20 years ago. Some of you have owned them for over 20 years !

Tell us your secrets.

New owners – what questions do you have ?

We may even be able to coax Bruce to post here. :^)

There are so many modifications that can be done.

Dressing of the wire with this arm is critical to get optimum sonics along with proper counterweight setup.

Let me start it off.

Please tell us what you have found to be the best wire for the ET-2 tonearm ? One that is pliable/doesn’t crink or curl. Whats the best way of dressing it so it doesn’t impact the arm. Through the spindle - Over the manifold - Below manifold ? What have you come up with ?

What effect does the damping trough have on the arm?
Does Bruce still sell them?

I just installed a Jun Air 6-25 today and find it runs for 2 1/2 minutes and then shuts off for 8. Not bad.

Thanks you posting the reply. I will read over it a little later. I just mounted a Benz RubyZ think it sound fantastic.

You can get new arms from ET. I just bought one from Bruce a couple weeks ago.

I recently purchased a ET2 and now need to get it mounted on my VPI classic. A friend gave me the actual jig used by ET, unfortunately it is missing the bushing to drill the mounting hole. I'll take my time and get this right the first time. I hope.

Tim
Thanks Chris,
I talked with Bruce today and put in an order for the missing bushing, magnesium arm,and high pressure manifold.
I will keep posting my progress.

Just got mine up and running! This is a very big change from the stock Classic arm. Took some time to find a compressor and build a surge tank, but well worth it.

Tim
Just getting started. Much better on the soundstage. More balanced and smoother on the highs.
Tim
Thanks for the offer. I will work on the arm for a while and let you know. I still have only 2 or 3 hours on it! Home life has been a bit buzy.

"I broke the audiophile rule - don't change more than one variable at a time."

Guilty!
What's with the shipping on the 1st add? $150!!! Yikes!
Is that for him to deliver it himself?

Tim
Not sure if this has been brought before.
I read a post on Audio Asylum about the manifold mount and how flimsy it is. The guy found the right height and then built a new mount out of ebony. I simply used a piece of wood and wedged it under the manifold. This made a huge change in the soundstage and overall quality of the system.

I have the ET mounted on the plinth of my VPI Classic. I took some time and used several blocks of wood to get what I think is the best VTA. I also have the table mounted on Stillpoint Ultra SS's and one of them is on top of the arm mount. I taped the hole with 1/4 20 and screwed the Ulra into the mount.

Love to see videos or pic of the ET 2. This is mine. I changed out the cartridge to a ZYX Omega Ultimate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh91bEcwkvo
Are there any sonic benefits to the aluminium base and arm joint? Would like to know. I just received them in the mail!

Tim
ct0517,
I don't think Bruce would make anything that didn't sound right, so i bought the parts. I do remember reading about the joint  you have way back in this thread I think. I'll see if have time to swap out the parts and give it a listen.

I wish I could report back some solid findings. I cannot. My personal life has been far too busy and I just could not pay attention that well. I do believe that I did put the arm back together better than it was. This could give me better performance on its own.
