Dylan in surround sound? Uh, why? Most tracks are nothing but an acoustic guitar, a snare drum and Dylan's voice, maybe a harmonica here and there, and I don't want any of them floating behind my head. What a waste of effort. |

6 Bob Dylan Albums to Appear in Multichannel SACD
Earlier today Sony Music confirmed that they are making a couple of changes to their upcoming Bob Dylan reissue series. The changes include a switch in two of the albums to be released this summer as well as a decision to issue 6 of the albums in 5.1 Multichannel sound rather than issuing all of the titles solely in Stereo.
During the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Sony's Legacy Recordings label announced that it would release 15 classic Bob Dylan albums as single inventory, Hybrid Layer Stereo SACDs this summer. The releases will mark Sony Music's entry into the Hybrid SACD market in the U.S. (Prior Sony Music releases in the U.S. and other markets have been Single Layer SACDs with one exception - an SACD issued by the rock group Spitball by Sony Music in the Netherlands.)
A Change in SACD Titles
Today's announcement from Sony included the news that two albums originally planned for release on SACD this summer: Royal Albert Hall and Time Out of Mind will be delayed until later in the series. In their place, Sony will release Planet Waves and Blonde on Blonde. Sony also characterized the release date for the 15 Dylan SACDs as being in "mid summer" rather than the previously announced dates of May/June 2003.
With these changes, the new lineup of 15 Dylan SACD releases is as follows:

6 Dylan Albums to Appear on 5.1 Multichannel SACD Discs
The SACD rerelease of Blonde on Blonde will be a 5.1 Multichannel release. According to Sony/Legacy, the new Hybrid Multichannel SACD of Blonde on Blonde "will supercede the original stereo SACD version of the recording, which was the first Dylan title ever released in the Super Audio CD format."
In addition to Blonde on Blonde, five additional Dylan SACDs will also now appear in 5.1 Multichannel format. These albums are Another Side of Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Blood On the Tracks, Slow Train Coming, Love and Theft. Since these are Hybrid Layer Multichannel SACDs, these discs will also include Stereo SACD and Stereo CD mixes and will be playable in SACD and CD players as well as SACD compatible DVD Video players.
According to Sony Music "Music fans will have reason to rejoice this summer as Columbia/Legacy releases 15 of Bob Dylan's most celebrated titles on hybrid Super Audio CD. From among his very first albums to his most recent, these remasterings will take the listener closer to the master tape sound than has ever before been possible. All original tape sources have been used for every title and the utmost attention to detail has been paid to these landmark recordings. Not only has the sound quality been vastly improved in the stereo mix but six of these titles will be released with an additional 5.1 SACD surround mix, as well.

Sony Launches Hybrid SACD Production Lines in U.S. and Austria
Today's announcement also included the news that Sony Disc Manufacturing Corporation's plants in Terre Haute, Indiana in the U.S. and in Austria have started their production of Hybrid SACD discs. Initial production at each of the plants is in excess of 15,000 Hybrid SACDs per day.
The new Dylan SACDs will be the first SACDs to be made at the new Sony Hybrid SACD plant in the U.S. (Hybrid SACDs made at the Sony plant in Austria include the 4 new Hybrid Stereo SACDs on the Alia Vox classical label which are already in stores such as Tower Records.)

I am looking forward to the DSOM on SACD. I was a little disappointed when I first heard it was coming out on DVD-A (after buying an SACD player) but it looks like luck broke my way and it is on SACD only NOT DVD-A. DSOM is still a classic and I am hoping it will sound great! And NO, I don't think the music is silly (obviously!). |
September 1960. Freshman orientation week at Brooklyn Polytech. First night we all had for the village where we stop in at Gerdes Folk City. Bob Dylan live; we didn't know we were seeing and hearing the beggining of a legend!!!
Oh yeah; second night we head for Manhatten to see a Bardot movie. They cut all the good parts (no pun intended). |
Me, too, Pardales!! I have one LP collection, another of CDs, and a third of boots which is a mixture of CD and LP. Oh, and another one of books! Geeesh...they sound good enough to me as it is.
I would MUCH rather see SME issue all the backlog of stuff they have in their vaults (more "Bootleg Series" kind of material) that have everything reissued on SACD. |
You know, I own to much Dylan to re-buy it all. I just don't think I want to do it. |

Give me a break!! Now I get to buy these damn discs for a third time (fourth if you count LPs 30 yrs ago)? Didn't Sony, just within the last 3-4 yrs, release all of these as Remastered Superbit Mapping treasures? Didn't I buy most of them after buying the stupid things in the late 80s - and hating the sound of every one? Didn't I do the same thing with a dozen Miles Davis CDs? I'll stick with my 24/96 CD system and leave it at that. Maybe someday I'll check out SACD when disc costs are the same or less than CD. I'm enjoying music too much now to steal time from it for another pie-in-the-sky upgrade hunt. |

Well Brulee only time will tell.
I have a Sony DVPns900 which can only be probably described as a moderate player (I'm trying to put this statement in context obviously there are better SACD players about) with and have found SACD overall perhaps to be a little disappointing but I will say I have found that the only SACD disc I have on a recent recording does show the type of improvement I was hoping for(David Bowie- Heathen).
I think this shows the potential is there.
On the only related discs are the Stones reissues which have so far been released (I haven't heard Blonde On Blonde )I found the difference between the SACD layer and the CD layer to be marginal with the nod going to the CD one!
However what I've heard of The Stones discs they do sound great on either layer, they have been remastered very well.
Since most of Dylan's catalogue could do with a brush up I would say we can't lose. |
Thanks so much Ben for sharing the "Dylan SACD-good news". I guess it is time to look for an SACD player. I have yet to dive into the SACD format. Now I have good reason to do so. I guess I will be owning two CDP players. I can't think of a better reason putting off SACD any longer now that Dylan is or has released these masterpieces.
Do you believe Dylans SACD recordings are that much better than the regular CDs? I am more than willing to purchase an SACD player if Bob Dylans recording genius and sound quality is just marginally better. Until now I have had no urge or reason to own an SACD player. If you are telling me that I will have Bob Dylan sounding better than ever, I can't think of no better reason not to invest in an SACD player. Thanks again for sharing this news. I am in you debt. |
Patrick what is interesting is that the two major SACD releases the Stones one and this planned Dylan one aren't multi-channel at all.
The Dylan releases will have a SACD layer and a normal CD layer so they'll play in normal CD players.
On many SACD (non-CD discs) there are multi-channel and stereo layers it means the two are distinct and seperate.
I do not have a multi-channel system so all the SACD's I listen to are in stereo although a lot of them are also multi-channel.
I have heard mult-channel (both SACD and DVDA)on a friend's system and it can be impressive.
Clearly the Stones/Dylan axis is to get SACD discs into the collections of people who don't have SACD players so that they might consider buying a player at a later date. |
This is good news Ben. I don't have an sacd player and have never heard one. Do you think that the multi-channel potential is a good thing? Or, more to the point, if a disc is made as multi-channel will playing it back in a two channel system take advantage of all the information contained in the disc? If so, this is a wonderful thing.
Notice how many regulars aren't posting? I hope they're having fun at CES.
