If all you do is stream Tidal/ Amazon I don't see any reason for roon just an extra expense.
Ditching Roon going back to BluOS for Bluesound Node 2i
My Bluesound Node 2i is connected wireless through my very good Eero Pro mesh wifi (love this network btw) and I hear nothing but awesome things about Roon. So I bought the trial and don't really like it.. I figure there's got to be something I'm missing.
Points and issues:
1. I do not use a NAS.. I stream Tidal/Amazon exclusively.
2. Big one here: Roon does NOT list the top songs from artists! You have to select the album.

3. Using wifi, there's a large lag in playing a song through Roon (10-20 seconds until the song finally starts mid-song) Works fine hardwired but it's not ideal for my setup.
4. The DSP functions in Roon is nothing but an EQ that requires me to know alot about what I'm adjusting and can only adjust from the main computer (core)
5. With Roon, I have to keep my main computer running all the time
All of these issues seem to be alleviated with the BluOS app.. Am I missing something here because I would rate the BluOS app FAR superior to Roon.

1 - I do. 2 - I'll have to check this when home 3 - Never had this issue 4 - It is a semi-manual process, it is not as integrated as anything with Dirac Live (like the miniDSP streamers) but it's pretty fully featured if you have the tools and experience to set it up. I use an old Linux with an AMD A10 CPU for the core, an SSD for the music, and a Pi 4 for the streamer. In my case, I dusted off the old Linux box, and got a Pi 4, so my hardware outlay was ~ $150. |
You don't like it. You don't need it. I would be lost without it. I use Roon to replace my previous iTunes + airport express (s) + airplay devices for multi-room synchronous streaming. It works very well for that AND streams Hi-Res while integrating my personal library with Qobuz as if its all one library with album/artist information and links to even more music. None of it is hardwired and is only utilizing an Eero mesh wifi. |
Thanks for the info.. I'm not seeing anything I missed and without a NAS, I don't see the benefit for me. This is what I expected. Also, I don't really need the DSP if I use my Anthem integrated amp because it has ARC. But yes, @erik_squires when you select an artist, you can only see the albums listed, not top songs. I love the top songs feature in Tidal/Spotify/Amazon... I feel lost without it. |
@ozzy62 Greattt.. Looks like I'll be wasting another whole day at work trying to justify buying a Lumin now. Then not buying because of all the "bits are bits" posts that make me feel stupid for paying that much for just a streamer. But many seem 100% convinced that a streamer is NOT just a streamer. |
Compared to the Node 2i, the Lumin is more transparent and natural sounding. The music seems to be more continuous and less digital. As good as the Node is, and it is a killer value, the Lumin just steps it up and makes the music so much more enjoyable. And of course this is with both streamers going directly into my MHDT Pagoda via SPDIF. At least that's my take on it. Oz |
Well, the Lumin is 4 times the price of the Bluesound, so if there is anything to the saying "you get what you pay for", it should sound better. And of course, looking down the line, when a better streamer comes out for the same price as the Lumin you will loose 4 times as much on its resale. But when is the last time you paid twice as much for an audio doohickey and got a 50% improvement. I really don't think most 10K speakers sound twice as good as 5K speakers, all things considered. But as audiophiles we tend to pay a lot for incremental improvements. To my ears, the Lumin sounded good enough to shell out the $$. YMMV....... Oz |
Mostly I was hoping he might check in and make a cameo appearance. A lot of the old posters signed out before they left, letting us know they were quitting posting. But he just disappeared one day. big_greg, he was just one of a few that had a pleasant way of pointing out the strength's in someone's system, because he seemed very familiar with a lot of equipment, I mean about a ton of equipment. If I could channel him I would, sadly no, but thank you. |
