Cables more hype than value?

What are the opinions out there?

since better has not been denoted, it is impossible to reolve this issue

who ever says such and such cable is the best, realy means, in the subjective sense, that the cable in question is preferred over other cables heard by the one making the statement,

since it is impossible to hear every cable, take such statements as anecdotal and not very useful.
the question posed is a variant of "are cables over priced" ?

this subject has been discussed before. the answer is still the same.

its a matter of economics. the value in use = the value in exchange. this means that a cable will sell for a price that the market will bear.

since the market for expensive cables is small, the demand is probably inelastic.

whether expectation, opinion or advertising creates demand is irrelevant. the issue is, does expensive cable sell in sufficient quantities to render viable, business that sell expensive cable?
what is not considered here is the fallibility and unreliability of perception.

this means that one cannot know that there is a difference in the sound of cables, but that it is one's opinion that there is.

it has nothing to do with being open monded or closed minded.

our senses are imperfect and unreliable.

i won't presume to be aware of what someone else is hearing and will not contest his perceptions. i will reserve judgment tto listen and draw my own conclusions.

the important thing is not to be judgmental.

it does not matter in the abstract what someone says about matters of the sense, since no knowledge can be derived from them.

thus the discussion of cables being hyped, or components sounding different is academic.

live and let live.
if someone came from mars and read all of the posts, there would be only one conclusion:

the posters are a bunch of oc audiophiles.

i am not from mars so if the shoe fits....

one might think about the proposition:

why is there so much discussion and when will it end ?

a corollary would be: who cares whether cables are subject to hype or not ?

plenty of products have their qualities exaggerated and people accept it and don't obsess about it.
can someone explain why there have been 300 + posts in response to a thread whose subject is cable ?

at some point the horse is dead, along with the tangents and secants.
why is the question generating so many responses.

it seems the dead horse has been killed several times.

the number of responses seems to me totally out of proportion to the subject.

if companies exaggerate the claims of their products, the consumer will eventually find out and the company will lose business.

is audiogon an outlet for audio "yentaism" ?
I recently reviewed the high fidelity cables ct-1. you can read the review on the website audiophilia.com.

if the review is to long go to the conclusion section. perhaps , leave a comment.

the value of the cables under review was $9200.

my editor removed the cost of a digital cable, which is $800.

based upon my review all cable is not hype. moreover, the affect of the cable rivals that of a change in a component.
if you read my review I do not mention a lack of depth.

I heard solo instruments in the background, relative to the foreground ensembles.

while I would admit that they bring the listener to the music, it is not at the expense of depth.

other cables may present more like a mid to rear hall perspective. sometimes, a recessed treble can create the sensation of depth.

I was listening to a recording of the Brandenburg concerti, and replaced one tube in my Vincent cd player, and observed greater depth from a harpsichord solo.

in conclusion, it is possible to create greater depth, by changing tubes and/or other components in a stereo system.
i should also add, i used the vincent as a transport to the ps audio perfect wave dac (the original). there was no forwardness with that combo, either.

the vincent makes an excellent transport.
I changed a tube again and depth increased.

besides the digital source, the pre amp, amp and speakers also determine the soundstage,

while a cable may have tendencies, they can be counteracted by other changes in your stereo system.
I checked the inside of the cd s7 dac and cd a7 on the Vincent website.

there is no evidence that the tubes are hard wired.

I also called a California dealer, who said the tubes are not hard wired.
I will be getting the Vincent cd s7 dac. i'll pop the cover and report back. I will be reviewing the player.
I have a 12ax7 and two mullard 6922 picked out. since I will review the unit, I must get permission from the distributor to review the player using NOS tubes.

In my own Vincent cd s6, I am using a tesla 12ax7 and mallard gold pin 6922.
regarding the original thread, hype may be a marketing ploy by manufacturers, or the result of owners' cognitive dissonance, but "value", is subjective.

thus, the question has no answer.
isn't hype essentially, exaggerated claims, not supported by facts ??

thus hype is opinion, but it may not represent a person's true opinion, but rather put forth to help sell a product.

if so, hype is not limited to the sale of cables.

value is purely subjective. it is a $$ amount a person thinks a product is worth.

thus the question is rhetorical, since the two subjects in the sentence are like apples and oranges.
