Bryston BDP-2

I've been making some changes lately. In an effort to get my source right, I debated between a PS Audio PWT and Bryston BDP-2. I decided to order a BDP-2. I received the digital player on Thursday. Unfortunately, the BDP-2 didn't work. I could hear something moving around inside and it wouldn't power on. Although I heard it in a store, I never had a chance to hear in my own system. For some reason, the BDP-2 is the only item I ever received and thought the look and feel didn't justify the cost. Before I decide to get a replacement, I have a couple of question for BDP-1 or BDP-2 owners. Has anyone compared either digital player to a Mac-mini? Is there a significant difference between the BDP-1 and BDP-2?

Zd542,

In addition, I'm very frustrated trying to decide if I should go from my Parasound A21 to a Bryston 4bsst2. I thought I had an opportunity to compare the two at home, but it fell through. My concern is it my be a lateral move.
Zd542,

No need to apologize, I understand it was your humor. I'm at the point that I want to complete my system and be done for awhile.
Ricred1,

Sorry. I didn't look carefully enough. I thought you had the Bryston DAC. Also, you are correct about me not knowing how much you paid for your cables. I was just going by list price. Given that, the reason I brought it up to begin with is that you see so many people spend more for cables than they do on their components. And since I screwed that whole scenario up, its understandable why you didn't see my last part of my post as nothing more than humour. But at least I got the first sentence right.

Zd542,

The BDP-2 isn't a DAC? My DAC is a PS Audio DirectStream. I didn't pay anywhere close to $4100 for my speaker cables and ICs!

I submit it's great that you're concerned about my marriage, but I post questions on Audiogon with the purpose of receiving opinions on equipment, not my marriage.
GENIUS!
Ozzy,

First, thanks for the response. I looked at your system and see you have a Pass amp. My next purchase will be either a Pass 250.5, 250.8, or a pair of Parasound JC1s.

I already have a 2TB external drive and a new Ipad mini to control the BDP-2. I just wanted feedback from current user regarding the quality of the BDP-2. I'm assuming you like the combination of the Directstream and BDP-2?
I own the BDP2. I'm using mine with a PS Direct stream Dac also.
It is definitely worth the money.
Looking inside it, there is not much to it.
However, I think its one of the greatest finds in my audio journey.
I have several 1TB Hard drives and flash drives plugged into it.
With my IPad I can control every song that I want. Be it 24/192,DSD or any other recording in my over 5000+ files.

Once you get a replacement unit, play with it for a while then make a judgment.
"The Bryston BDP-2 is a dedicated player for high resolution digital audio files."

The BDP-2 is not a DAC, it is a way to get digital media TO a DAC (i.e., you must still purchase a DAC).

If your purchase had parts rattling around inside, return it.

I sometimes say things that get me in trouble, and this is probably no exception. But, the DAC you're talking about here is $2300. Your IC's and speaker cables cost $4100. How did you justify the cost on your cables? For $6400 you could have gotten a DAC that is pretty close to state of the art.

Unless you are looking to get a divorce, I suggest you stop and rethink all this.
