The Youngbloods (one word) were around for a number of years. Remember Darkness, Darkness? Sunlight?, Both were big FM radio hits in 1969 from Elephant Mountain, a truly terrific album.
Guns and Roses (for best of 80's rock band and in the original "Appetite for Destruction" member line up).
If four records counts as short lived, of course, I'm with Msarty, and the great

Uncle Tupelo

I'd add

Nadine

three records, with their first, "Downtown Saturday," an alt country classic.

Also in the vicinity, with 3 or 4 records,
is

Whiskeytown

another alt country classic. Never bought into Ryan Adams after he left the band. Maybe Caitlin Cary was the driving force.

John
The Zombies or The Fugs. By the way, was watching a rerun of the Johnny Cash show the other day - Derek and the Dominos was one of the guests- and they did a tune with Carl Perkins , Johnny Cash, and Eric Clapton playing side by side.
Yeah, they're not deep or philosophical, but they put out some of the best pop rock I've heard.
Not vying for "Best" how about just "Some" short lived bands..............Beck Bogert & Appice, Dixie Dregs, Masters of Reality, Baker-Gurvitz Army, U.K. ,Sea Level,Charlie

I had fun going thru my collection.
Alice in chains... No doubt they lingered for about 7 years, with no real backing concert tours, and a few albums, but they were never really a band due to many obstacles, and still accomplished a lot of great music . And they were the first to really hit the scene from the "Grundge" capital, not nirvana.
stormtroopers of death! (did more for metal with one record than megadeth ever did)

sex pistols

derek & dominos

buffalo springfield

original lineup of the pretenders; after that, they were just pretending.
Sex Pistols - one record really...HUGE impact and one of the best rock records ever made...
Look through the thread and you will see remnants of them scattered throughout. They were the original spawn of so much music.
The original Paul Butterfield Blues Band. First and only time everyone in the Filmore was up dancing.
Blind Faith. For sure. Absolutely. Not even close. "Do What You Like" is worth the price of admission on it's own. Ginger Baker's solo is BY FAR the best rock solo of that era...probably of all time. And don't go all Neil Pert on me.
Buffalo Springfield maybe? The spring board for CSN&Y and Poco. Maybe not the best short lived band but they were certainly a very influential band from the folk/rock fusion genre of the mid 60's.
Legion of Mary - so intense in concert. Wish I could remember more of it ;-)
Bobby and the Midnights
Gentle Giant
Robin Trower
Tommy Bolin
Matching Mole, Henry Cow, Hatfield and North, Tuxedo Moon, Egg, Art Bears, Soft Machine, Japan
