Best garage speakers
I need two good garage speakers to fill 900 sq ' and to sit against a 30 foot wall. Eyeroll, I know, this is a sophisticated forum but help an old guy . We 4 guys have a few whatevers and listen to good tunes after fishing in northern Mn . I have a Yamaha RX-V992 receiver. Bookshelf or floor speakers are fine. I have room for a sub too..I'll spend up to $400-$500 for a used set on Marketplace or this site. What would you look for to buy

High efficiency horn loaded speakers are used for concert and theater PA systems quite effectively. They can fill large areas without sounding strained and have great dynamics. In that price range some slightly scuffed up Klipsch Forte I or II's with 98 dB sensitivity and frequency response down to 32 Hz would be good candidates, but worth trying even if they are priced a bit higher. Remember, a rather equivalent Forte III retails for over $3000 and are quite popular. Good luck. |
Older VMPS Tower II, or SE if you can find them. Dual 12", with 12" PRs tunable for ANY room, or amp.. 12" sub, 12" mb (options there too), 12" PR. They have everything, 19hz - 20k + They will fill 900 sf with ease. The BASS will blow your mind, mids there are a few options and the highs are split between an inverted dome and a true ribbon. Actually a 5 way speaker, with 1st and second order XO, Bi ampable. 500 + watts 115+ db or 25-75 goods tube watts (I used MC 240-275) push them just wonderfully. BTW NO need for a sub, they really have it all, for the money. BIG boom boom in the room room. 4-700.00 about 100-120 lbs depending on the upgrades. They are a true reference speakers... They can play chamber music to Rock and Roll Z Z TOP, get down boogie...and right in to Island music... Regards |

That is a lot of square feet for a Bose 901, If you can't find the VMPS floor standers, go with at least a horn loaded, or super efficient speaker. The Bose, The Dalquist, that kind of speaker, your amp is gonna run out of gas real quick in that big of a room.. It's your $$$, you can still buy REAL smart, The Heresy is a great speaker, just will need to add a sub. VMPS, no sub needed, really they will out do ALL of the suggestions, I've had most of them, at one time or another. Close to the 500 pairs of speakers I've actually owned, 130 pairs, I made or designed over the last 45 years or so. VMPS is one of the few besides the older RS Infinity speaker line, I still tinker with. Infinity just isn't efficient enough, but surely good enough, with enough amp behind it. Regards |
You can buy a new pair of EAW designed Mackie SRM450 1000 watt (powered) PA speakers that could blow the doors off your garage for about a grand a pair. I've used these in various forms for pro sound work for decades, and they're virtually bulletproof, very well designed, and sound amazing. Used pairs of these things are cheap, and no "home audio" speakers I know of can play as loud and clean as these things. I use an "unpowered" pair of the smaller 10" woofer version in my studio with a sub, and for live stuff also. They're even cheaper. |
Thanks for the help on this. I bought a pair of Forte ii's. The Forte's look like new but haven't had any of the updates I've read about. $600 was a little more $$ than I wanted but their fanbase indicates I have heirlooms that can be passed on for generations. So now it seems they deserve an amp to validate their sound capability. I have a Yamaha RX-V992 up at the lake. I'm going to try find a better power pairing for it . Maybe a tube amp. Any suggestions on an amp that shows up for sale often that I could watch for. Thanks so much to everyone on this. |
