Audio Science Review = "The better the measurement, the better the sound" philosophy

"Audiophiles are Snobs"  Youtube features an idiot!  He states, with no equivocation,  that $5,000 and $10,000 speakers sound equally good and a $500 and $5,000 integrated amp sound equally good.  He is either deaf or a liar or both!

There is a site filled with posters like him called Audio Science Review.  If a reasonable person posts, they immediately tear him down, using selected words and/or sentences from the reasonable poster as100% proof that the audiophile is dumb and stupid with his money. They also occasionally state that the high end audio equipment/cable/tweak sellers are criminals who commit fraud on the public.  They often state that if something scientifically measures better, then it sounds better.   They give no credence to unmeasurable sound factors like PRAT and Ambiance.   Some of the posters music choices range from rap to hip hop and anything pop oriented created in the past from 1995.

Have any of audiogon (or any other reasonable audio forum site) posters encountered this horrible group of miscreants?

I am disappointed you are insisting I do this. Do you truly believe you have not been making derogatory comments?  I am not the only person who will see these following comments as derogatory.

Yup. Those type of comments are par for the course here as it's taken for what it sincerely is: adult banter. The problem with acolytes like yourself is that you need to get out more often and grow a thicker skin.

Taking a look at the Atalante 5 speakers really whetted by appetite. I can see them easily replacing my JBL 4319 monitors as I have the perfect stands for them. Now I have to wait and see if a retailer opens near me and for some reviews. Nice history behind them.

Perhaps it's time to start coming up with some alternative versions of what the initials ASR stand for.

Also-ran?

There are also audio reviewers who won’t take comments on their Youtube and personal audio sites for the same reason: insane, vitriolic attacks, most likely by the same members here if not of those of the same mindset. One reviewer even stopped reviewing for some time due to the animosity he received, only to come back, not accepting any form of contact.

There are some truly sick people out there and some would like to harm you, so be careful who you share personal information with.

That is one sick, twisted individual who went and did that. Used to be that kind of crap was done in political circles but audio circles? Must be of the same mindset cohabitating both worlds. Again, sick and twisted individual. It’s a shame that some demented bozo just can’t tolerate a differing point of view.

It might be of benefit to A’gon members if you really know who it is to report it to Admin to get that person a permanent ban and to the members here so they can shun and avoid them.

The world of audio is filled with nothing but anecdotal narratives. Having some measurements doesn't make it authoritative. It's still anecdotal. All you have is some measurements to (hopefully) correlate with what you're hearing. But time and again, it's been proven not to be so.

Anomalies in measurements can point to why something sounds off or bad, but even good (measurement) performing gear can fail to please the most experienced listeners. The audio world is full of tests and reviews of gear that measure well but just don't cut the (audio) mustard.

I've read here on other threads that there's no difference in measurements before and after break-in. Yet, like you, I heard the differences, even during the break-in period.

On another thread about measurements, I mentioned that I read on a review that despite the different options for selecting filters (on a CDP), they all measured the same on the component. I even cut and pasted the section on it.

Hmmm? Different filter settings resulting in obvious sound differences yet they all measured the same. Could it be that the analyzer could only "measure" the summing of the signal and not the "flavor" of the settings?

I never got a cogent answer for that.

It stands to reason that there is a scientific, measurable and objective way to rate audio components

Rate them how? That they'll work when turned on? That they'll make sound when hooked up? That they'll work well with other components within reason?

That's about the extent of how to rate an audio component that's been "scientifically" measured. As to how it will actually sound is another matter.

I'm still amazed at the hyperbole that ASR adherents use when describing anyone who disagrees with them. Also, the overuse of the term scientific as if it's a charm of sorts and can't be refuted, lest one anger the audio gods.

For a guy who goes by the handle, quiet, he can talk the leg off a chair.

He owns the best test equipment money can buy.

Was that after it was pointed out some time ago that the test equipment he used (at the time) was no where near the cost of the one John Atkinson uses or any of the ones at the time that cost way more than this?

Wow. Spotting shoddy workmanship is not a high watermark to brag about. Any good reviewer would do that.

As for Tommy lost, he had his day in court is still, some pretty sick sh*t to go on about in an audio forum. Having a trial in the pocket of a judge and jurisdiction where hunting humans is okay as long as you're on the "winning side" is not what you'd want people to think of yourself unless you're one sick individual with an axe to grind.

So it seems you are the same, lame individual(s) under a new handle, as has been pointed out.

you must feel like Thomas Binger ESQ.

Wow. Really? That's some pretty sick sh*t sick to espouse. Are you really in that camp?

Hey guys,

I'm just happy I came across that article demonstrating the fallacy of believing static measurements is all there is to know, and needed. Kind of reminds me of when Apple came out with those "moving" still images taken on an iPhone. When you took a photo, it was actually a very short video and when viewed, gave life to that photo that it never really could capture as a still image.

There are probably more than a few here who miss the good old days of arguing over Covid vaccines.

Love the way crymeariver plays the false equivalency take by faintly damning Amir and letting loose on A'goners, painting us all with a broad brush. Nice, if your intended audience is woefully obtuse.

I used to know guys that could identify cars by their sound. They were into street racing and knew all the angles but certain makes had certain sound characteristics that couldn't be masked by any mods.

Same goes for reviewers way back in the early days of CD players. A few with the "golden ears" could walk right into a listening session and state which DAC chip was being used without looking at it. It was more primitive back then so the field of DAC chips was quite narrow but they could "hear" the chip and it's attendant sound characteristics.

I expect that what I see here is what many others will see while reading these sorry pages. A calm, experienced, knowledgeable, detail oriented, expert in this particular aspect of his field professional who is going up against a bunch of classroom bullies who are doing their attempted best at a character assassination.

Never seen an audio fluffer before, not as good as this one.

This is not adult banter @nonoise , this is an out and out attempted character assassination. It is not done in jest.

Make that very thin skinned.

ASR should rename themselves AMR (for Audio Measurement Review) and leave it at that. Hiding behind the escutcheon of "science" and using it as a bulwark to  promote their agenda while possibly hawking gear or reassuring others that they need not spend their hard earned cash on better sounding gear is getting old as it's now been made clear.

The jig is up.

@laoman ,

Props for that link to the Darko exchange with Amir. It spoke volumes. Darko is such a class act. I could (and should) learn a thing or two from him on how to engage the absolutists and dogmatics one encounters along the way.

Change a few pronouns, descriptors and names to the above post and all of a sudden it's a diatribe against what he's saying.

Thank you for your valuable and insightful perspective, and welcome to a place that hopefully, you can feel comfortable posting.

On an aside, have you recognized any of the "technical experts" posting here who've been running roughshod over the members back at ASR?

prof, sounds like something a Crusader would say as he marches to retake the holy lands. No doubt they were quite talkative about it.

Scientific measuring for the sake of ascertaining something is useful and needed but not for every damn claim made by someone who hears a difference. The fanaticism exhibited here by some in the objectivist camp are akin to religious extremism.

Every conceivable excuse as to why you can't hear what you're hearing is right up there with being born with original sin. That you can't hear correctly and are a fool to trust your senses, is quite an asinine position to take for a harmless and simple hobby.

Saving you from yourself (emotionally and economically) is yet another parallel aspect of this religious like zealotry. So is having a flock of sheep followers and acolytes sent out to other lands (websites) to combat (think Crusades), proselytize and convert.

If god were never invented or ASR never existed, we'd all be right where we're at, enjoying our hobby and sharing our experiences, as if none of this ever arrived on our doorstep in a flaming paper bag.

Indifference comes to mind. Most of the discussion on this thread has involved discussing the finer points of a wine no one here wishes to drink.

It's all the sediment clinging to the wine glasses.

Why don’t we call it a draw and go out for ice cream...🍧

  • what flavor?
  • what make?
  • how much?
  • what kind of dish?
  • cold or hot spoon to dish it out?
  • toppings?

Just saying....

Maybe understanding what the word troll means in the context?

That treads a fine line between humor and trolling.

That went right over someone's head.

Sometimes, one needs a point of reference to understand something.
