Are audiophile speakers turn on for single women?

I recently purchased a pair of speakers that I showed to a non-audiophile female friend of mine. She said they looked beautiful and asked how much they cost. When I told her, her jaw dropped. She then asked if I was using them to pick up hot chicks. Hmm...I told her the only people who get turned on by my audiophile speakers are balding middle-aged men. She had a laugh, but I wondered if anyone tried to impress a girl with his stereo system. High end is a male dominated hobby like sports cars. So have you found a woman who was turned on by your system. I have had no such look. I just get blank stares when I talk about my hobby to women.

Great thread. Hats off to Elizabeth, our own outspoken tech diva. A chick that knows her way around the machinery is ALWAYS sexy.
Dracule1,

I didn't believe it for a minute since your Hyperions are not only far from being beautiful but also resemble coffins. I know, I have a pair.
Original question relates to single women...as a married woman, I'm pleased to know where the hubby is when i hear him listening to his system...he probably thinks the same way about me.LOL.
I personally think i depends on how you address yourself and your hobby, how your home look like. Me myself, have the room so very treated almost everyone think it's like a cave. Very dark and music oriented.
Mostly, overhere (Up in the North of EU), it 100% nerd status, and people think you're straight up stupid. Even so, most people i know of, who loves music and a few are very skilled musicans. They still don't agree to this. I think people are so blocked from unknown things. if you bough a car, boat or anything close to that, they understand. Seems as when people don't understand, it is just weird for them.
I am very open, many i know of in this hobby is more laidback as persons. Never mention it to people around, especially no prices. Would be interetsing to see if more people noticed this to.
"women do not have much interest in equipment, just results"

Well put.

A lot of men too I suspect. I care mostly about results, not what gets me there, though you cannot achieve the former without addressing the later.

Elizabeth, I appreciate your insight into why women like diamonds as well. I think I knew this but never thought about it quite that way before....
At the risk of being too serious in responding to a light-hearted question, I'll say this. I didn't select my speakers to turn on women, but to enjoy music. And I am looking for a woman who enjoys music, not responding to my equipment rack. (Ha ha, I said "rack" -- must be a subliminal message.) As long as we are both focused on enjoying the music, and each other's company, who cares what she thinks about my speakers?
"I didn't select my speakers to turn on women"

Me neither.

But my OHM F5s are pretty ballsy as speakers go, if I may be allowed to brag a bit.

I've been considering trying some of that Axe stuff that they advertise on TV for cleaning certain alluded to naughty bits with them.

I consider my jewelry to be my lovely red Wireworld digital interconnects! Pretty blue Cardas balanced interconnects. When we first started upgrading a few years ago, we bought our system on Valentine's Day!
There's all kinds of bling - I prefer mine to make music.
And yes, most women do not care....perhaps a shoe shaped speaker??
"I consider my jewelry to be my lovely red Wireworld digital interconnects!"

Audiowoman,

I prefer qualities in a woman often praised by superficial men.
In general women and electronics dont mix...even if they have a faint interest they will play the dumb blonde card and pretend they dont have a clue (although some actually do but simply dont have an interest)...however you will have much better luck in you help her design and install her HDTV set-up...got some action that way...whats my name?...Samsung! ha...
To answer the question posed in the original subject line, NO.

A nice, classy guy with a boom box and a Barry Manilow CD will get more action than a cad with 6 digits worth of Krell / Wilson.
Classy guy with a boom box is a contradiction in terms.
Krell/Wilson don't look or sound too bad - there might be a chance. 6 digits..you meant 5 plus 1 ?
Another 45 divorced guy of 5 years. Whenever woman come over they are more impressed by the B&O system than my dedicated audiophile system. I am always asked, "You still listen to records"! True!!
My cat was a better filter then the Stereo.

If the lady and cat got along, it was a very good sign.

If the lady liked my cooking.....BBQ, home made bread and a trip out later for desert, that was also a good sign.
Nothing worse than a woman who picks at her food and tries to stare a cat down. Near-automatic disqualifier.

As for the guy with the boombox? Do people with megabuck stereos SERIOUSLY think that makes them classy? My spouse works at a very hi-end resort / spa which has far more than its share of rich jerks. People that need someone to tell them the time......or tell them what the weather is like....when the door is 30 feet away. So much for rich and classy.
Listening to records! A suspicious 'fringe' activity. As for the B&O, it is terrific eye candy, more akin to art for the eye and ear. But not for the serious lunatics that post here!
They might...if they know you have Diamond tweeters.

Sorry Elizabeth...I couldn't help myself. :-)

I always wondered about this.Almost all women I know are satisfied with a $49. boom box.Any attempt to get them a decent system is meet with total rejection.I think how much money I could save if I was like that.
WOW Magfan, not to much of a generalzation there. Classy, is a state of mind NOT of OWNERSHIP. But you obviouly have issues. For the record I have 10 cats and 3 dogs. Does that make me classy? To some yes, to others no. But most importantly, I DO NOT CARE! I see myself for who I am, not what I own. For what I do and not what others think. People can be self centered and ignorant at times. That is just the way it is. But don't worry about them or their actions, just worry about your own. It makes life so much better!
Me? Issues? did you read what I wrote? both posts?
Isn't that what I said? If someone thinks that 20large worth of stereo imparts 'class', that is a mistake. You CAN, of course, have both, but the stereo does not a classy guy make. Any more than does owning a certain car or living in a certain neighborhood....
I'm sorry if I wasn't 'clear'.
No, 10cats / 3dogs does NOT make you classy. It makes you the owner of 3 dogs and STAFF to 10 cats. I'm sure that either the neighbors hate your cats or you spend an hour a day on litter box duties. Unless you live rural and than the darn Coyotes will be after your poor cats.
I'm not worried. I was trying to put a humorous twist on what is an obvious kooky question.
If by ‘classy’, you mean ‘animal hoarder’...then yes, you are classy. lol :-D

For the record I have 10 cats and 3 dogs<<

How's that ark coming along?
I hope you keep your animals well.
My cats had the run of the place, never looked 2x at my panels and were at all times civil little beasts.
Even the neighbors remarked that when my cats would visit there back yards, their was no digging or other anti-social behavior. The big orange one like the pool next door and would just sit and watch it.
The neighbor on the OTHER side had a HUGE Black Lab who liked cats. When my cats would refuse to come in, I'd go borrow the dog. CATS IN.
People were amazed when my wife would call them....in Spanish and they'd come running.....
'Wow, your cats understand Spanish!!' sure they do. lol
Why don't you guys stop it about cats and dogs? We are talking here about women and diamonds.
You could argue the point of course that women are animals too, but that would be a totally different discussion.
this is a hilarious question... i doubt a hot 'chick' would go back to your place on the single basis you have an audiophile system. if you already have a 'hot babe' on the coach, odds are she is in the mood to be courted anyway so she will be gushing over anything personal you are into if she is like most. tbh, most guy friends i have are not that impressed either tho. be that said, gold diggers will always take stock in knowing you are able to blow a wad of dough on what to them is a simple music delivery system. once you marry them tho... hasta la vista to upgrading your baby as casually as before wedding day, unless you are really well off. i think your friend was equating hot chicks with gold diggers which is often accurate.
In my experience, women, either:

a. Dislike audio
b. Hate me...

Probably the latter...at least that's where my head is right now.

Larry
Vernon, I think I agree with you about gold diggers, but I've met my share and none of them actually had any idea how much my system cost. They usually judge how much I'm worth by my car. I once had a women approach me at a club and say, "you're cute...what kind of car do you drive?" To which I replied looking at her chest, "are those real?" Well she didn't seem too happy and ran off in a huff. Guess I have a way with gold diggers. My current girl friend has no interest in my hifi, and I'm glad because I don't want her taking my sweet spot ;-)
Don't kid yourself. Try dinner conversation about speaker cable and amplifiers. You are a nerd in their eyes. Can you blame them?

If you live in a drop ceilinged basement with a big TV, leather like vinyl furniture, eat a lot of processed food, and do your laundry once every few months, I don't think most single women will be impressed that you have say, Zu Dominance loudspeakers and cable elevators.

However, if you man about town kind of a guy, who knows what you want in life, and are discenring and meticulous with your interests and personal belongings, I can assure you that single women will notice and appreciate good audio equipment and speakers.

Of course, this has to be introduced by focusing on music, not hardware, in the same way that a woman mgiht first notice the "color" or the interior of your Maserati.

But despite women's alleged indifference to hardware, they will be more impressed with the Maserati than they will by a Toyota with the same color and interior.

Hugh Hefner always featured elaborate audio systems in his early "bachelor pads" and in my opinion always did pretty well with girls.

Cheers,
Yes, Hugh Hefner is the reference standard when it comes to knowing how to impress girls!
Hugh Hefner is skeleton with skin, and he is the biggest gold digger magnet I know.
I know one woman who is impressed by equipment and even owns her own business.

My wife is not impressed with equipment or my friend.

I've never met another woman who was impressed with equipment even among the musicians I associate with.

I'd say "NO" to your question.
i wonder if
Manley gear impresses the girls
?
Mapman

I wondered the same thing, but she just laughed at my 'Manley Shrimp'.

I think the biggest turn on for my wife is when I mop the floor. Am I getting old.

Soon audiofeil will jump in here and say I have to make a disclaimer.

Hey "Theunderlyingtheme" great moniker but I suspect there is something behind, or below it. Are you an author?

Curious but with no underlyingmotive.

Jim
I would say yes. Anything expensive is a turn on for single women, it means you have a lot of money that can someday be redirected to their benefit:)
Draculel, Of course by equipment I'm referrring to audio equipment be it speakers or anything else. Women just seem disinterested.
Orpheus10, Even Prince Charming had old stinky drawers and smelly socks, keep em away from your women, do your own laundry. "No honey, the clothes pins in the laundry room are actually for your nose" (chick turn-off #1) Women say they want a "sensitive man"..take her to a chick flick, and she turns and see's you tearing up??? (chick turn-off #2) these are just some of the small battles in the war between the sexes. Goal? You both end up victors in the end!
I know this is getting slightly off topic, but there was a polygamist from Utah being interviewed by the show 20/20. He left that life and ended up with his first wife only, but he said "there were times when all seven would be mad at me at once"! True
Expensive? for some this is a definite turn on. Like thinking that he must have lots of loose cash to spend on me.

If they like you after seeing your audio setup, you either have a really good one, or a really bad one.

"looks just like a Telefunken U47".

I couldn't resist
