I had a pair for about 2 months in a small room where I was listening in nearfield. (Using an Audio Refinement Complete integrated and a Bel Canto DAC1.) They did not do well for me, at all. Maybe they will work better for you at 9 feet, but I cannot recommend them based on my experiences as I did not care for the sound at all. You would also need a subwoofer for "satisfying bottom end." Good luck, Charlie.
THE amp for these speakers is the Audiomat Arpege Reference. It exceeds your price range by a few dollars (a smidge over 2000), but it is the best I have heard with these speakers. For cables, try cardas. Cheers!

They need about 2 months to break in initially, and they still improve thereafter... Before that they can lack dynamics and refinement, sound harsh or bright, uninspiring. They can produce magic.
