In a comparison with the xa777es, it sounds (maybe) not quite as good in redbook cd (definitely debatable here), it sounds the same in 2ch SACD and maybe a touch better in multichannel SACD.
I purchased the xa777es right before the xa9000es came out. I glad I did for the simple reason I don't feel I would have really gained that much with the newer model(after listening to it a while) and I prefered black which you can't get in the new model. I also use it in 2ch.
It does have a few more bells and whistles.
