I just learned that Neil Innes is the latest musical personality I care about to have died. Neil was co-founder of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band, seen playing in the subterranean bar seen in The Magical Mystery Tour. Their first four albums are fantastic---musical comedy of the highest order, much more clever, subtle, and humourous than Frank Zappa imo. Better songs, too.
Neil then created the fictional band The Rutles, a spoof on, of course, The Beatles. There was a movie (again, superior imo to the later Spinal Tap, which I also love) and an album, both great. Fellow Rutles were Eric Idle of Monty Python and Ricky Fataar, drummer in The Beach Boys in the early-mid-70's.
